Steering box

Last night I parked the truck ('02) in front of a store bought some fruits, got back in, but could not get out of the parking spot. Steering wheel turned, tires did not. It was dark and raining and did not feel like crawling under so I walked home in the rain. This morning went back not too far, and realized that the steering box shaft is snapped where the pitman arm connects. More than half of the diameter is corroded, telling me that it was cracked a long time ago. Had it towed to the dealer, they said it is not covered under the power train warranty.
Should it not be? how about it being defective from the start, I mean 1" + diameter hardened steel shaft just does not break. The truck has never been in a collision or driven off road or any other rough activity.
Any thoughts? I appreciate any input. How much will this cost if not covered?

Go aftermarket, the stock junk will just do it again.

More things are NOT covered by the powertrain warranty than are. Guess they view this as a wear part??
