Starts very rough

Early 2004 5.9. Changed the water pump and all the hoses. Had to pull the alternator to get the lower radiator hose, so I disconnected the batteries. Got everything back together and when I tried to run it, it ran very, very rough and I shut it off right away. Went under the hood and checked everything I could think of that I might of knocked loose but found nothing. It's almost like the timing is off. I tried to start it a few more times after moving around wires and such, but no go. Had the air cleaner off so I checked the turbo to make sure nothing went in there, but it looks fine. The trouble codes showed a fault in the crankshaft postion sensor, but reading about that it is probably from the very rough idle. Would this sensor cause the engine to run rough? Its about the only one down in the area I was working in. Any ideas of what to check would be a help cause I'm stymied.

John:

Welcome to the website!

YES,....a bad crankshaft position sensor can cause the rough running you are describing! I would suggest checking your connections to the CPS first. If they look alright disconnect the lead to it and thoroughly clean both ends of the connector with electrical contact cleaner. I use dialectric grease on my connectors before hooking them back together.

Thanks, the sensor was the issue. The plastic cover on the end of the sensor was damaged. Found one tooth on the ring it reads slightly bent. Must have hit it somehow. Cleaned up the tooth to make sure it would not hit the new sensor and everything seems to be working fine.

Sure is a good feeling when it looks like a horrible problem and ends up being something very simple! Glad it works good.
