Starter Contacts

Hi!

From stuff I've read, I think I might need new starter contacts on my truck. I turn the key and it just clicks, if I hold it for a little bit eventually the starter gets some juice and the truck fires right up like normal. Most of the time it starts just a bit delayed, but a couple of times I've had to try 3-4 times to get the starter to kick in.

This has been somewhat intermittent for the past 2 weeks or so. Has anyone had this? Where can I buy a contact kit? Would it be worth it to just go get a reman new starter from Autozone for $130 and be done with it - this one has given 130k miles of service...?

FWIW, everything else seems to be checking out fine (14.5 volts at alternator when grid heaters off, batteries testing OK). It sounds like the contacts have caused others the same symptoms!

Thanks!

Well, never tracked down a contact kit so I threw in a whole new (reman) starter from Autozone - Lifetime warranty, so can't complain there! I'm glad I just did the whole thing - it's kind of a pain to get it out so I hope I don't have to do it again for a long long time... This morning the truck barely started after work, so I picked up the new one on the way home.

The truck starts awesome now!

I missed this the other day but i would have said to just replace the starter.

Glad it's fixed!

I had the same issue a few years back and picked up the kit from Geno's. It isn't a lot of work once you have the starter out.

Still having problems starting... Since the new starter the problem is 85% better, but still there. Last night my 4 y/o son and I were WAY back in the woods scouting for hunting. Got back to the truck after hiking and turned the key - nothing... The little red light on the bottom right of the dash turns on - no clicking now. Re-did the startup procedure a couple of more times and it started right up.

Does anyone have any ideas? Relay? It's weird that I get nothing and then it starts right up like nothing's wrong the rest of the time. I'm just worried next time I'm out in the woods is the time it wont start!

If the little red light in the cluster stays on, I suspect the problem would be within the sentry key system. It isn't recognizing the transponder in the key.
