Starter contacts and axle seal - what next?
Starter contacts and axle seal - what next?
Rhetorical question, I know.
My wife just called from somewhere in Kentucky? with the news that the starter is acting up and that one of the axle seals is slinging oil bad. At 140K+ miles I reckon it is to be expected from the original equipment. She has the 96 on a little "walkabout" right now and is inbound with it. Told her to not be too worried about the axle seal and that if the starter just started acting up then it should make it home OK. Told her that if the starter does not disengage to pull the battery cable if she can before it eats the starter.
Looks like LarryB's contacts will get ordered tomorrow and new shoes for the rear along with the one-ton wheel cylinders will be waiting for her.
If she can't get it to crank in the morning I may need to ask a favor of the KYDTR membership. Don't know where she will make it to before crashing tonight but I'll definitely call for help if needed. Wish her luck.

Re:Starter contacts and axle seal - what next?
Thanks bulthisl - haven't heard from her yet this AM.
Keith - I AM worried about the solenoid. But since this just started (one time yesterday) I hope that it is in the "just an annoyance stage" and she can get it back here before it becomes a larger problem.
I told her that if she was going to be in your area to stop by and have you bump the timing and slide the plate ;D. Don't think she made it quite that far, though.
When you get ready to open the shop I will make the trek for a little wrenching action. Have a good one (tell Lisa we said hi).

Re:Starter contacts and axle seal - what next?
Update - starter not being an issue at this moment (subject to change). She is planning to only stop at truck stops that have a mechanic on duty so if it does act up she will at least have a wrench close by. This is the time I need the keyless remote setup so she could leave it running and lock it and go inside without fear of it disappearing.
She is actually just the other side of Indy coming back through to Cincinatti and then down 75 to 40. If she calls with troubles I'll find out where she is and put out a call.

It's my pot and I'll stir it if I want to. If you're not careful, I'll stir your's as well!

Re:Starter contacts and axle seal - what next?
Just had a thought about the axle seal leaking. Is she sure it is an axle seal and not brake fluid? Just to be sure get her to check the brake fluid level.
Re:Starter contacts and axle seal - what next?
well I'm around the natti area. if she breaks down give me a call. O by the way my contacts lasted 2 years off and on :
Get the laryb's they are soo much better than the stockers. I was suprised over the difference between the two. any one know where I can get my engine timed for free in the IN KY OH area ;D
Thanks

Thanks for the thought Mexstan - she used to be an OTR truck driver - she knows the difference and would be alert to the brakes going away - but I will leave her a voicemail to tell her to check anyway. (Just talked to her - definitely not brakes - but now the AC ain't working right :
)
dm01 - I hope she is all the way into KY by now but I appreciate the offer. (74 around Indy down to one lane - she is just now getting into Cincy)
Kinda apprehensive about both my babies being gone and the one carrying the other getting cranky. Reckon both of them will need some TLC now. Contacts on order, axle seals waiting for me on the way home. Will move the 53 IH out of the shop so the CTD can fill it up.
Just picked up the AC recharge equipment this weekend - looks like I'll get a chance to do more with it than I intended.

Re:Starter contacts and axle seal - what next?
Update - she got in at 2:30 this morning. Upon quick inspection through wheel wells this morning it looks like pinion seal because both sides of hogshead are oily and inside of tires are clean. Will get her in shop and on stands for a better look this afternoon.
She made it 790 miles yesterday to get back home. Told me when she got in that she saw the sign for Cynthiana, KY but didn't stop to linger.
Thanks for the offers of help during this little escapade. Good to know there are people around willing to help if needed.

Re:Starter contacts and axle seal - what next?
Glad to hear she made it home safe.
The offer still stands anytime broke down or not.
We're not as bad here in Ky. as some like to think. :
Have a good one and I hope that pinion seal is all thats wrong.
At least it's not a biggie to fix.

Re:Starter contacts and axle seal - what next?
Glad to see everything is OK. With just a little TLC, the red one will be back on the road in no time. Everyone needs a trip to the doc every now and then.
