started smoking no tuner

figured i would ask the experts for some advice so here goes.

was pulling my 6k trailer today and out of no where my truck starts to just billow out black smoke while easing into the throttle in drive. almost exactly like i had a programmer on it. it is all stock besides intake and exhaust. it will smoke a big cloud when i jump on it also or just roll on it easy. also puffs pretty good when it is in park and i just rev it up. ( no load ) .

things i checked so far.

exhaust doesnt smell like fuel just really sooty black almost a white or blueish maybe smoke for a split second then pure coal black.

oil was alost two quarts low . never been low before but havent checked it in 5000 miles.

no fuel in the oil

not using water no oil in the rad.

truck seems to run fine no starting problems power seems normal just smokes alot now.

no engine codes or check engine lights.

checked turbo no excessive play no oil on the blades or the intake side.

pulled the oring out of the feed line to the turbo still looks good .

any ideas?

sounds like a boost leak or a bad injector

would it still be possible to be a boost leak when it smokes when it is in park and the turbo does not spool?

Do you have the plastic end cap intercooler? If so, this is more than likely your issue.

Yeah, I'd look for a boost leak. I don't see a boost gauge in your sig... ??

Lotsa smoke can mean no air. Even if you had an injector hang, you'd still have power.

Look at your air filter too.

I'd pull everything off so you had nothing before the turbo, and see if that changes anything. If it does, it is a filter restriction. If not, then I'd look at your intercooler, then your piping.

i do have a boost guage stays the same 28-30 psi no change in that. took the intake off the turbo and reved it up in the drive way and it still puffs black not alot just noticable black puff. when i get on it it smokes for a sec or two then clears up at wot. just never seen black smoke like that from this paticular truck and it has 70,000 miles on it

The '05 trucks have plastic ends on the intercooler. Where the plastic tanks meet the aluminum core they are crimped together and are known to leak. Have the intercooler checked for leaks.

You could always pull the exhaust manifold and see if it is coming off a particular cylinder... You could then pull that injector and have it tested.

if i pull the exhaust manifold i should find oil (wet oil) in the head port for witch injector would be sticking? i always thought injectors were more white smoke all the time then black smoke? no visible cracks on the intercooler nipples.

If the body or nozzle is just cracked a little, it might not be enough to put the fire out or flood the crankcase.

I'm not saying that's what it is, just a guess. I don't know if the exhaust port would be wet or not.

DON'T DRIVE IT!!! You have an injector hanging open. ANY white or blue smoke in the situation you describe is cause for concern. Likely the injector is not seating and dumping fuel late in the injection cycle, and, wat too much in the main portion.

If it has never used oil and now used 2 quarts it may be too late. Quite likely you have scored a piston or broken the rings. Better get the injectors out and tested and a compression test done to see if there is damage before it totally trashes things.

As madhat suggested... check your air filter. Sometimes the simplest things are over complicated by over thinking. I'd change the fuel filter too. Both are cheap and won't hurt a thing to change.

2 quarts low on oil in 5000 miles is normal and not excessive. I wouldn't even think any more about that.
