Smoke

Is this normal for an 06 3500 with 37000 miles. Dealer has had it twice and says it was condensation build up that caused smoke. Only happens after truck has been sitting for 8-10 hrs. I default back to your expertise as truck is heading back to dealer on thurs.

I got the same mileage as you, and mine lets out a little cloud when it has been sitting overnight, but not nearly as bad as yours.
Is your truck stock?
May be an injector problem.

truck is stock. The throttle question I have know answer for as the dealer is the only one t do any maintenance on the truck. All maintenance was just the routine normal oil filter changes etc. nothing major.

if your doing a lot of heavy haulin and really pushing the pedal hard there's a good chance it will smoke a little, but never seen it that bad. the dealership was probably telling you that the last 2 times there was nothing wrong, so that you would drive it more and now it is out of warrenty. since your only over 1000 miles on your warrenty i would try and push the issue they do something cause it was in the shop twice, for this reason and they did not fix it the first time!!

no heavy haulin.....just take the fiver out every other weekend. I take it easy on the pedal. trying to keep the mileage the best it can be. My approach to the dealer this thurs (dodge advised me to get a second opinion from another dealer) will be the three times requires a fix under warranty.

That isn't normal at all, of all the 03-07 trucks my family has owned 7+ not one has ever done anything close to that. Some smoke at startup but is gone in a few seconds. Something is wrong for sure. I would hound one dealer over and over until it's fixed.

Your dealer is full of it, that is not condensation burning off.

Do you ever run power service diesel kleen or stanadyne? Is your oil level going up in-between changes? Will the smoke clear up if you turn on the high idle(1100rpm)?

Nice looking truck and 5th wheel travel trailer. Diesel trucks sound so good !
Bet you like them 4.10 gears in the mountains.

I do.

could be a leaking injector. check your oil for fuel, and (if still under warranty) mention to the dealer that you're aware that these trucks are prone to injector problems and you'd like them tested, because you think one might be leaking down.

That is not normal; my truck has never done anything like that. It does smoke a bit when started in single digits or below zero.

You need to get a 2nd opinion from another dealer.

Smoke

Thanks to everyone for the great input. I will repost after I finish with the
dealer on thurs or fri of this week. I am at 37000 + so I suppose I am going to go thru warranty issues but the motor is warranted for 100,000 so the work should be covered. I value the input you submitted.
Thanks

Not normal at all. Looks like an injector problem to me like others have said. And that would be on the engine warranty which is 100k mile, so you should be good. I'd just go raise some hell, and make em get it fixed

If the smoke is white upon starting after sitting for a few hours, you most likely have a bad injector that is leaking down. Ask the dealer to do a "duty cycle" test on the injectors. They all should be 95% (???) or higher. If any one is vastly diferent from that value, then that is the bad injector. Get it fixed quickly as it usually gets worse over time and has the potential to ruin the engine due to deisel leaking down into the crankcase among other problems. Also your idle will be a bit rougher than usual. I just had the same issue and the #5 cyl was at 87% and the #6 was at 91%. The dealer replaced them both and now the truck runs much smoother and milage increased too. If an injector is bad, have them change the oil also for the fuel leakdown problem as stated above.

Also: Make sure you put the Smarty back to Stock before you go !
