slow warm up

The 04 takes almost twice as long to warm up, about 15 miles, as my 01.
Is this normal?

bout the same on my 03, i think cuz the extra coolant capacity and extra huge radiator. I guess it takes some time to heat 7 gallons of coolant

Try using your block heater for about 3 or 4 hours before you leave in the morning. Really makes a big difference. YOu'll have heat very quickly.

Just put the cord on a timer so it comes on at a set time.

It seems in most cars, the coolant heats up to temp much more quickly than the oil temp. I wonder is this still the case in the cummins since it has such a huge coolant capacity? In my past vehicles, I generally waited a while after the coolant reached temp to really get on it, waiting for oil temp etc.... Does anyone have an oil temp gauge and know the answer?

I blocked about 75% of my radiator with carboard and that helps it warm up quicker, I'd say about 30% faster (10 miles instead of 15 or so).

The oil filter is hanging off the oil cooler, which is in the water jacket right before the thermostat. Oil temp and coolant temp run pretty close together on our trucks because of this. It's like getting an oil heater for free!

Yep, and it's true of PowerStrokes (new and old) as well. Pretty much every heavy duty diesel has a water-to-oil oil cooler.
