Question Slammed on brakes, now leaking gear lube

I had to slam on my brakes this weekend to stop at a light (I was looking for a turn and not paying attention) I was only going around 35mph and there was a loud "bang" like metal snapping and the only thing i can find is the front axle is leaking gear lube from the pinion seal now.

how can slamming on the brakes make the axle leak?

I can't imagine slamming on the brakes could damage your front diff, even then it doesn't seem like it would leak unless you broke the pinion...mabe the bang was something you had in the bed of the truck or in the cab??? I believe that the oil leak is unrelated, as these AAM axles have a reputation for leaking from the pinion seals. The dealer will fix.

nothing was loose in the cab and the bed was packed tight with camping gear, i thought it was the scuba tanks but they there wedged in.

I have an appointment to drop it off on Wednesday at the dealer, they said it should be covered under the 70K power train warranty. "should"

"should" meaning yes - unless we can find any possible way to blame it on something you the driver/owner did or didn't do whether we can prove it or not or even if we have no idea what we're talking about. Gotta love dealers.

I'm sure they'll take care of you OK but they do like to delegate responsibility to anyone they can. Good luck - hope you get everything straightened out.

Don't tell them you slammed on your brakes,or they'll void your warranty for excessive vehicle abuse and racing.

I would not be surprised if they said something like that.

well they are going to cover it under the power train warranty, it needs a pinion seal, but they have to order it so I have to take it back on the 9th.
