Question Silencer Ring

What exactly is the "silencer ring." From what I've read, it seems to be something next to the turbo that makes it quieter. Is this right? Is it easy to take out? I sure want to hear the turbo on my new truck when it comes!

Do a search you will get all the info you need. It is easy to take out. Remove the intake tube from the turbo housing. The Silencer ring is a nose cone shaped disc inside, it is held in by a snap ring. On the 3rd Gen's it can be kind of a P.I.T.A to take out do to the location of the turbo. It is easier on the second Gen's. It took me about 30 minutes to pull the one on my girls 03. You will definitly get a nice turbo whistle once it is removed.

I went a couple steps further and removed the baffles from the big tube before the turbo. Added in a AFE filter and WOW!
Genos Garage sells a replacement for the tube for anyone who doesn't want to alter their stock unit...

Sounds SCHWEEEEET!!!!!

I also replaced the baffled intake tube with an AIRAID tube. The silencer ring took less than 10 minutes to remove. Having two small flatheat screwdrivers makes the job pretty painless. You will like the resulting sound!

Is the ring also installed on the 600 motors and can it be removed?

By baffle tube, are you refering to the foot long straight tube between the airfilter and the turbocharger compressor inlet? If so, then yes, the 600 has one. Its supposed to help with turbo noise. I would be interested in seeing what you replaced it with. Got any pix?

Hey Big Block
You seen to know a lot about these new 600's. I've been hearing a lot of different opinions on this subject. Do you know for sure if the 600 has a cat converter or is it a resonator? if its not a california model......

I was going to start a new thread but I'll add to this one because it may have to do with what I'm going to mention. I'm not sure what or where this noise is coming from but I'm pretty sure it's from the turbo.

I have noticed a "noise" usually when the truck has been first started or what I'm going to call "cold". It sounds more like a large fan rather than the turbo but as the truck gets warmer or I push up the RPM's this noise turns into the turbo whistle I'm use to. I was just wondering after reading this thread. Could this silencer ring make or cause this fan sound I'm hearing at lower RPM's or when the truck is cold?

My TDI is a variable vane turbo and makes different weird noises as it warms up (straight pipe from turbo back so the turbo wine is really pronounced). Do the new 04.5's use a Variable vane turbo or is it still using a waste-gate type???? IF variable, you'll hear the different sounds as the vanes adjust controlling turbo RPM.

Just my opinion here so correct me if I'm wrong.

i-bleed-disel,

Have you noticed a big difference after taking off the cat? Does it sound different or have more power or get better fuel economy? That is very interesting because I plan to do the same thing with mine when it arrives!
