Shutoff noises . . .

I know the CTD makes lots of funny noises when you turn it off. My concern is that I hear a metal-to-metal kind of noise when I turn mine off occasionally (maybe half the time). It almost sounds like the starter solenoid trying to engage or disengage. Is this a normal sound or something I should be concerned about?

Might be the exhaust flexing when the engine lurches during shutdown. I would doubt it is the starter solenoid. That would be more of a grinding noise. Try to start it when it is running. You'll know what I mean.

Neil,

The only noise I get is the "woosh", which I am told is the turbo charger releasing pressure.

Oh, I'm quite familiar with that sound. I've had more than a few vehicles that were so quiet at idle, you could easily do this by mistake (diesel trucks NOT among them, BTW). I was thinking more the sound if the engagement of the solenoid like when your battery is almost dead, it will engage the starter, but not turn it - something like that. It's a single tap, like someone is hitting something metallic with a hammer. Exhaust flex is something it could be. Does anyone else get this?

That's consistent with what I get about half the time. This is definitely a metal-to-metal sound - single tap as described above.

I have been in the Bomb dump for the Air Force for 18 years and have been driving the CTD in the dodge since they came out, except we call them ugly trucks because the Air Force chops them in half and moves the rear end right behind your butt, then they put a ultra low gear in it and a governor that limits it to about 25 mph so we can pull munitions around the flight line, ok... all that to get to this, my 03 makes the same shut off sounds as the old ones we use, kind of a squeaky metallic sound with a shimmy, she just dont want to stop running I guess.

Yep, mine churps too, sounds like it takes a little longer for the drive belt to stop than the motor. I've never heard the sound you described though.

Chirp is the belt. Case backhoes do it also. Powerstrokes also do it.

Yeah, that noise will get worse when you start using the AC. It's just the fan clutch and belts that were running stopping all of a sudden when you perform the shuttdown. Don't sweat it just "Drive it Like you Stole It"

On my 02, I get the chirp and turbo noise, but I also get a low growling sound that tails off well after the ignition is turned off. Could never pinpoint what it is or where it's coming from.

I get the chirp but not all the time wish i did though i think it is cool people always look when it chirps i have had diesels for about 5 years now they are higher compression engines than gas and i think that when you shut them off it is such an abrupt stop that the engines stops alittle quiker than the belt.

just my opinion

Chirp IT IS! Thanks, guys. I feel better now. Now, I can concentrate on the real issues like the 70mph vibe and the bad fuel mileage.

Might be the A/C equalizing itself after you shut down. This will give a growl sound past the orifice tube. Will last for quite a while, depending on the outside temp.
