I guess the wording is a little confusing, sorry.

This might help:

I had the same thing happen to me on my GMC about 10 years ago. Since then, I have always looked for stess fractures on all my vehicles. I'll never forget that day, all power gone, temp going up like mad and me thinking, "What the HXXX". With all the heat and tension, being a casted peice, I'm surprised this doesn't happen more often.

I have to wonder how much force is exerted on this pulley since every so often many of us get the big clunk when the a/c kicks in. I was told this is normal. Not on anything else I have driven it isn't. Did the engineers really sit around and say to themselves "let's design an a/c that every so often will wake the driver in a panic with a big clunk - now that would be fun."

Mine doesn't make a BIG clunk. It sounds like if you would make a fist and make a lite blow to the dash. I'm just curious why this happens to the diesels and not the gassers. Never heard it in my 02 1500. I believe their the same condensor/compressor and all. Weird..I'm not really worried about, I've heard plenty of compressor's kick in, but mostly sounded like a very loud spark.

Bringing this back to the top. See my other post; my belt started shredding this morning. Waiting for the tow truck to take it down to the dealer.

We'll see what they say on Monday.

A/C intitial engagement has made a bang noise for a long time on CTD equipped dodges due to the sudden spike in pressure. The hotter the ambient temp the more pronounced the noise is. Also watch an a/c compressor engage on a gas engine, you'll note the rpms drop as the compressor will drag the engine down. Your Cummins doesn't slow down so it basically doesn't act as a "shock absorber" like the puny gas engine.
