is it normal for the rpm to vary(change) about 100 rpms when cold at idle?

 

Mine does it....but not when it's cold because it hasn't been cold here. I've about decided mine is caused by the air conditioning compressor kicking on and off.

 

My 01 does that too, I think its a combination of the AC compressor swithching on and off... and just the way the tachs work on these trucks.

You need to quit inspecting that poor truck with a magnifying glass and just drive it and enjoy.

It would seem some run a tad slow when first starting out even here in warm Florida.

Amen and yes. A slight variation in RPM at idle is normal. It seemed that mine got better with the addition of miles. The idle speed does seem not to vary as much as it did on my 01.5. Relax and enjoy your new rig. ;D

 

Fiver is right young fella. Just enjoy it. They seem to take 4 or 5000 miles to settle down adn stop making funny noises, vibrations and so on. Unlike a gasser, these things really do have to be worn in a bit.

And yes your RPM flux is normal when cold in the AM. Wait till you start on of these puppies when it's about 10 degrees out and the wind chill is about 40 below. Then it will show you noises and sounds you aint never heard.
