Rought Idle 1st time

This am. I had the common rough idle for 10-15 secs. I rev'd up to 1300 rpms for a few secs and it went away. This is the 1st time. The fuel filter is a new one (5micron) and I double filter the fuel from my L-tank. Fuel is from a good source and is not old. There were no codes thrown. I do not want to start a forum about injectors, fca, fuel pressure leaking off (not saying it is not one of those topics) And I don't want to get into the "it's a diesel" because I have had 4 of these and never had this rough idle (only when bleeding air after filter change). But what I do or would like to hear is how to troubleshoot this issue and how to go about it. It has warranty left, but my experience with dealers is not so swell. Thanks!!!

Generally you've done what you can , codes =non .
It happened once & for a few seconds , you can not find whats not there .
If the problem persists , then it may be some thing to chase .
Maybe a connection going bad to a sensor or actuators , giving a short electrical glitch , if you get any indications or start testing , put a dab of dielectric grease in every connection you unplug .

Is it possible that you didn't let the grid heater cycle all the way before you started it up? Mine has run this way only a few times and it was because I didn't let the grid heater run a full heat cycle.

I am pretty sure the grid heater was off. It really felt like a misfire/ dead cylinder. But with an increase in rpm's it went right away. I did call my dealer and told them about it and that I did some research on these forums and alot of folks were talking about injectors, fca, etc.. He proceeds to tell me that 1. they are not seeing injector failures, but lift and injection pump failures. 2. He gave me the song and dance about offroad fuel being a cause due to the growth allge in it. (I almost gave him the big bs card on that one). Since posting the initial post on this issue, i ran a tank with powerservie and have not had it again, not saying that would have fixed it anyway. I guess I wont worry about it. My guess, is that it wont act too bad until I pass the 100K marker??? That seems to be when I get the good ole Bosch fuel system failures. (by the way, my 94 had to have a new fuel system installed on it, and my 01 had to have a new fuel system installed. I hope this trend stopped on my 01 !!

It would help to know how cold it was. The ECM will drop cylinders to create heat if it's cold enough. It freaks most people out when it happens. I've had it happen a couple of times, but not since I started plugging in the heater all the time now.

It's pretty normal to have some bumping and thumping if you start them cold without using the block heater.

Doing an inj flush-either yourself or by a pro.The stuff you pour in the tank is ok-but not really strong enough to clean really dirty inj's

If I read all these replys correct... I should 1. check to see if I have the lastest and greatest TSB updates. 2. if I do, then I should use a additive in the filter canister to clean the injectors. (seafoam example). I feel like I bought a Dell and not a Cummins.

It may be a good idea to run a qt of Power Service in the white jug to a full tank of fuel to see if that helps. Also you said your over head read 34 degrees so it could of been colder then what it showed. BTW where do you live so as to help us know if your area has winter fuel or not and if it could be a fuel gelling problem or not.

i live in SW Indiana. It gets cold, but I have only plugged my trucks in when they are sitting in the freezing rain/ wind outside, but 99% of time the truck is in a sealed garage.

Mine used to do it frequently (once a week), it mostly happened on warm days after it warmed up then sat for a short time before driving again. Dealer couldn't duplicate it, so they couldn't fix it. I installed Quad S last May and I have only experienced it once since then. I think it's a computer hiccup.

I thought the 3rd gens had the cylinder shut down feature also, apparently they don't, it ceased in 01 if I recall correctly.

The coldest it gets here as a rule is teens and 20s.Never have had mine rough idle, smoke.Never plug in.I wait until grid heater light goes out and fire it up.Runs smooth.Pops up to 1000 rpm as soon as it starts.Only a couple folks post about this 3 cyl.idle on a 3rd generation.(ONLY suppose to be a 2nd gen.thing)I'm not so sure they just don't have a smooth running cold truck cause its only a couple of posts once in a blue moon.
