I'm having trouble with my '03 rough idling and sometimes dying after a 20 minute or more run on the interstate. Went camping this last weekend pulling only a pop-up and when I left the interstate it will rough idle or surge when you let off the gas peddle and it drops down to 750 RPM. It's died about 3 or 4 times just this weekend from this. Starts back up just fine. This seems to only happen after a highway run...

Little history, it was reflashed in March for heistation from a dead stop. Had the lift pump replaced in July, and 3 injectors in August. I've checked and cleaned the CP3. I've been running Power Service in every tank and added 16oz of 2-stroke oil this last fill-up. This seems to eliminate the hesitation issue but has done nothing for the rough idle. Dealer & DC was at a lose since it gives no error codes and they replaced the injectors just for fun.

Now it's Monday morning and it ran smooth as glass coming to work. Truck is an '03 CTD 4x4 Quad cab LB with 80k on it. I bought it used this summer.

I wish I had some advise for you, but my truck does the same thing except it hasn't gotten bad enough yet to die on me. So far I have 6 new injectors and an ECM with no luck. The dealer had it for over two weeks last time and could not come up with anything definite.

 

check the connection on your fuel control actuator...mine did that and it was a lose wire.....

 

Well I may have solved the problem. Drove 1300 miles round trip this last week to Disney and started using TCW3 2-stroke oil and all rough idling and hesitation are gone. She runs smooth as glass now. Just added about 1/2 to 3/4 quart per tank of fuel and away we go...

 

I've had trouble in the past and it was my FCA. In my latest ride I have the opposite issue. It clears up on a good highway run. City driving lets it load up like an old muscle car. But nothing gets it running good like after towing our camper. I don't know if it is thanking me for the load or telling me it's sorry and it won't do it again.
