Rotella 5w40 synthetic vs Amsoil 15w40?
Rotella 5w40 synthetic vs Amsoil 15w40?
Opinions?
Was running the Amsoil 15w40 Premium Marine(AME) for the last 30k in my old truck. It has gone up considerably and now 3 gallons is about $60(Dealer cost).
I have access to Rotella Synthetic 5w40 for $38.37 for 3 gallons(I work at an auto parts store).
Is the Amsoil worth the coin? Been really happy with their products, but for $22 less an oil change I might change my mind.
Whats the gel/freezing point on the Rotella?
Thanks for the feedback

I know we ran the rotella 5W-40 in Alaska with pretty good luck in the cold. However, coldest I ever had the oil in was about -30/-35. Getting much colder than that I start worrying about the fuel first...
Amsoil is a group 4 oil.The Rotella is a group 3.You do get what you pay for sometimes.Biggest differance I've read about is the Rotella is not capeable of extended drain intervals.I'm sure theres some other differances also.I order Amsoil direct and have been a preferred customer for years for a price break. To me its like owning a diesel.I have to have a tow vehicle and the thought of going back to a gas burner dosen't enter my mind.I use Amsoil products and never really think about using anything else. Its in my lawnmower LOL.

I would first check your owners manual. My 06 recommends 7500-15000 mile oil changes with conventional oil. So extended drain would be something longer than that. Therefore if you are changing at or sooner than what the manual dictates why not go with dino oil or the rotella synthetic and save the money? Synthetic oil distributors are making a killing on people who change their oil at less than 15-20k miles. IMHO

How long can you run on Rotella? Just 7500? AmsOil should be able to run 15k at least. Depending on filter setup you could stretch Amsoil out to 25k, 50k, or even never do a full oil change again, just change filters and top off. Amsoils high price should more than pay for itself.
Run UOA to find out what works better for yourself...then you can make a decision from there. I used to agonize over Delo 400 15W40 or Amsoil- then I sent UOA's in and guess what? I'm still using Delo 400...
Second that Ive run both Rotella and Delo and sent in oil analysis on both and am currently using Rotella but feel comfortable running either. Check out some oil reports and make your own decision!

From: North Carolina or Kentucky. Take your pick
I assure that your engine will never know the difference. All oils(additives and contamination) eventually fail, so forget the lifetime oil change. I futher assure you that complete loss of either oil will guarantee a failure in about the same time it. So if $20 a change extra gives you sufficent bragging rights, then go for it. I suggest a EOA and some extension of oil change interval is acceptable. All the major oil brands that meet oil spec requirments are plenty good enough. Read oil analysis(independent) as someone else recomended. Use good oil filter also.
Go with what you want. I can say without a doubt that most 18 wheelers have been using rotella for years, and def. go more than 5,000 miles on an oil change. yes they hold 3 times the oil, but also have about 3 times the engine. As long as your oil is loading up (holding the dirt) filtering properly, you can get away with lots of oils. Syn is good, but unless you use it all up, again, how many 18 wheelers run it, vrs a conventional oil. I'm still running 15W-40, I should switch to 5w-40, but not worth the cost
Rotella verus Amsoil
Has anyone checked out the new OilGuard kit that is on their web site. It is a bypass kit (EPS-20 DCE) with the mounting bracket and all of the other fittings. I run Rotella 5-40w and it seems great to me. I will be doing a Oil test right before 10,000 miles. I do run my oil that long and not had any problems. Since I said that I need to knock on wood. I would stay with Rotella myself. A OilGuard bypass filter would help keep your engine clean and GM did a test with OilGuard that said that it would make your engine last 8X the normal like with the Bypass filter. That means if I run to 100,000 miles without a Bypass that with a Bypass I can run to 800,000 miles. Man that is alot of miles. I do run a OilGuard filter on my truck. These trucks cost to much to not take care of them.
Ordered some more AMSOIL. Doing the diffs too!
What kind of service intervals should I be doing? Most of my miles are like a 10-12 mile commute(faster two lane 45-70 MPH). Some highway. A little towing, but not much.
I was doing about every 7k on my 01. Was using K&N oil filters, which I've heard are made by Baldwin.
I get the best prices on these(About $10) or I can get Mobil One filters for about $8.
Thanks
