Ring and pinions?
Ring and pinions?
Anybody had to replace ring and pinions or bearings in the rear diff. ? How many miles? I believe mine has went about as far as I will let it without replacing been howling for awhile.
I bought mine with 25k miles. The diff lube looked good but it was below the fill hole. I pulled the shaft and axles and checked the rolling tq. and it was down to the minimum already. Dodges idea of 75w90 and the low level sucks! I do it my way now and it's still quiet and good UOAs at 59k. Craig
I started hearing mine whine at about75000. I hauled some pretty heavy loads this summer and it got a lot worse it's at 100k now. I checked the oil and it was well below the fill port. I added a quart of oil and later changed it filling to the fill port but I believe the damage is already done. It sounds like I have a bearing going out at about 60mph on up, the ring and pinion howls from about 40 to 60mph. I shot it with a fluke thermal imager looking for hot spots after about 30 miles of interstate running empty temp was about 135 deg. but no hot bearings.
You have that many miles on vegetable oil in an '06. That's impressive I didn't know how the veg. oil would do at those pressures. I always wanted to try running it, but was afraid of messing up my fuel system. Which bearing did you lose?
the biggest issue with veggie oil on the common rail system is making sure its over 160 degrees in temp before you switch over to it.. at 160 degrees the veggie oil is at a viscosity level of thinner then diesel fuel is... on a average day temp diesel tank... obviously if you raise the temp of diesel its going to be thinner also.. but that is not what we are looking for...
I changed my stat to an 205F unit and this assures me that the oil is thin enough.. i also run an electronic controller that automates it all... it uses a temp sensor that is tapped in 6 inchs from the input of the IP on the veggie side and then another in the tank and when both sensors are above my set limits then it automaticly switchs over to veggie... for filtration and such to make sure im not clogging the injectors i run a 1 micron filter inline to the veggie oil and before that filter i run a Dieselcraft Centrifuge that filters and dewaters down to less then 1 micron...and i use F.A.S.S pumps for both sides of the fuel system...

the rear end.. i beleave it was on the drivers side.. i cant remember really off the top of my head.. i use to work on my own trucks but i found a guy who does good work backyard wise for me.. he is a mechanic full time at porsche dealer and he sometimes comes home with not a drop of oil on his hands because of how little work they have for him.. but he rebuilt my rear diff with all new seals and bearings and such for $500.00
