Ring and Pinion question
Ring and Pinion question
Dodge just replaced my ring and pinion at 890 miles because of a howl you could hear over the radio, now it is a "little" better but not like my 1989 Cummins with 175K miles that you don't hear anything out of the RR at all!
Dodge insisted on replacing the ring and pinion only... I thought the whole 3ed member would be appropiate seeing the low miles but they said the factory knows best. My Question is... now the RR front seal is leaking from there repair!! do they have to pull the Ring and Pinion out again to replace the seal? Thanks for your input

Re:Ring and Pinion question
No it doesn't have to come apart to replace pinion seal if that is what you mean, they just have to take the yoke off. It is not uncommon for a pinion seal to start leaking but generally wont if they are put in carefully.
Really their should be no need to replace the entire carrier if just the ring and pinion were bad. Did they replace all the bearing, pinion and carrier, I would assume they did. If it was installed correctly their should be no problems unless something in the machining of the axle case itself is off, which is about impossible to fix.
They are not rocket sience to put in, I have done many myself with no problems. You just have to have the right tools and be kinda a perfectionist and get it all shimed right.

Re:Ring and Pinion question
What MM said. Shimming properly is the key. It does take patience to do properly. If they just replaced R&P and did not remeasure for the shims then you will still have noise. Do you get the noise on accel, coast or both? R&P noise is usually on accel or coast, bearing noise is all the time. HTH
Re:Ring and Pinion question
Thanks for the reply, the work Dodge did was
Replace R&P
Pinion Bearing
Pinion spacer
Pinion Seal which was damaged
Gaskets
Maybe I should also have them re-set the R&P seeing it's in there anyway, I don't think they should be set-up to make noise this isn't a Peterbuilt
Thanks Again

Re:Ring and Pinion question
Hi guys I had 2 rebuilds on my truck because of howling rearends ,anyway the rebuilds didn't work so I ask for an assembly they agreed, installed about 900 miles ago it's still howling it was from the very fist and it does it on load and coast! Now it's not as loud as the other but you still have to turn thr radio up quite a bit, going to meet with the dealer, zone rep next Monday and see if I can get a buy back are a replacement will let you know whats whats !
Re:Ring and Pinion question
There have been several members posting about noisy rears on the 03s and up with the new Amerian Axle components.
Most that I have read stated the dealer replaced the Ring & Pinion, and failed to eliminate the noise.
A few have finally had the rear replaced 'hub to hub' and achieved sucess, other are still waiting for Dodge to find a solution.

Re:Ring and Pinion question
ABB... it will be interesting to hear what Dodge plans to do. One thing I have noticed with my Dealer I asked for a new 3ed member not a fix to the old one (900 mi). The service writer made me feel that that they would do what I wanted. then when I picked up the truck they did what they wanted a rebuild!! he said Dodge wouldn't authorize a new one!! Now we go back again and again to try to get it right......Oh my my time must not be worth too much to them ???
