Restrictive Aircleaner

Guys,
Early on I remember a few guys mentioning that the air-filter indicator had pulled down after they had taken an HO for a test drive. Have any of you new owners noticed this on your trucks? If so, what has the dealer had to say about it? Thanks,

The Boss Hog
Waitin' and Worryin'
Re:Restrictive Aircleaner

Boss Hog, I have 1800 miles on my 2003, mostly towing. I've checked my air filter indicator a couple of times and it's pulled down to one-third. Each time I reset it. I havn't driven in any dusty conditions. This indicator could be the best sales-person on the block.

I'll go with what Phil said. My indicator seems to spend most of its time at 1/3 down. I haven't bothered talking to a dealer, as its most definitely a restrictive airbox. The stock HO is capable of pulling 27lbs of boost, and the airbox just can't keep up with it.

Rod

Ditto on the 1/3 here. Thought about poking some holes in the box, but I figure rather than risk any warranty type issues, I will let DC figure something out. Certainly doesn't affect how she pulls!!! ;D

What I can't quite figure out is how they keep the EGTs so low with such a restrictive airbox. At 105 MPH, my EGTs never get above 1050F. Cummins must be making a pile of power with timing advance versus fuel.

Rod

Pop your hood, Bob, and take a look at your air filter box. There's a little clear cylinder standing up on it. Thats the filter minder. The way it's supposed to work is as your filter gets loaded up, the little resettable indicator will get pulled down to the "replace" indication. You replace the filter and reset the spring indicator by pushing the button on the top.

Thanks, Commatoze,

There is a little plastic thingy sticking out the side of my air box - - have not had the thing long enough to figure out what everything is under there. I will check it tomorrow. Makes sense, unless the box is too small.

Bob

Re:Restrictive Aircleaner

That plastic thingy is not an original, check your wife's vaccum cleaner it has a filter (Bag Indicator). My wife's vaccum starts out with new bag at 1/3 full. It continues to suck good until it gets about 3/4 full, stops sucking at full. That's when I hear, "something's wrong with the vaccum". I doubt that our plastic thingys are precision instruments, just something else to remind us that filters need to be cleaned once iin awhile.

Re:Restrictive Aircleaner

I opened my air box today and examined the filter. Surprise, it is beginning to look dirty. Not bad put the tops of the fins are charcoal already. Must be filtering out the polution of the vehicles in front of me. Some 1900 miles of use. Reads 1/3 at present. When it gets to 50% I'll clean it by blowing from back side and see how the reading changes after cleaning.

It also looks like the fins are closer together, hard to tell. I is about 50% larger than the one on my 98 Ram 5.9L gasser. 8)
