remove stock muffler thoughts?

I dont have alot to spend on exhaust right now.

how would would the truck sound if i just took the stock muffler out and welded in a piece of straight pipe?

I have an 03 cummins 4 door?

guy @ muffler shop said about 50 dollars or so to do it is that about right?

I've never heard a straight piped truck but I think that price is way too much for a 2 foot piece of pipe.

Well $50 dollars is primarily labor, but not completely unreasonable for cutting out muffler and welding in straight pipe. If you have cutting and welding equipment just get a piece of pipe for probably $5-$10 from truck stop.

It would probably be REALLY LOUD!!!

I installed a 24" Magnaflow muffler, in place of the stock muffler. It's a straight-thru, 4" unit & it's pretty loud. When you put your foot into it, it roars. Pretty neat to romp on it in a tunnel or underpass.

I bought a 3-1/2" to 4" adapter, a piece of 4" aluminized pipe & the muffler. Had a local muffler shop install it.

Basically, they removed the exhaust system at the down pipe. Welded the 3-1/2" adapter to the front of the muffler.

At the front of the tail pipe, just behind the back of the muffler, the tailpipe expands from 3-1/2" to 4". They cut the 3-1/2" section off.

The front of the muffler was "clamped" (stock exhaust pipe clamps) to the down pipe.
The back of the muffler was welded to the stock (now) 4" tailpipe.

The 4" aluminized pipe was cut, to fit, & welded in place.

The muffler shop then fabricated muffler & tailpipe hangers to fit the stock body mounts.

I think the whole thing cost about $180.00, total.

You may want to try & find a similar truck that is straight piped & go for a ride in it. If you tow, it gets louder, yet. You may decide that you want a muffler, after all.

I paid 50 bucks to have mine done. It sounds good. Ofcourse mine also has a cat and a resonator, so it isn't like straight pipe.

As far as the price. You are paying someone to do something that you don't have the means or equipment to do yourself. He pays rent or a note on his shop and all the equipment and salaries for guys in the shop. By the time they get the truck on the lift, get it all done and check for leaks you are probably in to him for over 30 minutes.

Pay the 50 bucks and say thankyou.

Loose the muffler. Leave the CAT. Sounds just right. Not too loud but just enough to turn heads.

Its about 4 feet actually.
And $50 isnt bad for the job, most ive seen were 80-90 for pipe and labor...

For the nay sayers, I did on my 05 and love it.
As long as its a quad and not a reg cab it shouldnt resonate.
Id leave the cat( I did), sounds much better than stock, but not too loud, only drone I get is shift to 4th and when the convertor locks, but only under part throttle...
I have a friend that replaced the whole section and cut out the cat, and to me its obnoxiously loud....
If I remove the cat on mine ill install a resonator, or some kind of straight thru muffler to cut down on drone.
Or not and install the sound deadener I had planned on anyway

I had mine straight piped for about 3 days, there was to much drone noise driving down the highway. The stock muffler went back on, I want to try a high flow muffler to free it up to help lower egt's.

I don't like the sound of 3rd gens straight piped. Just personal preference, they sound kind of tinny to me. Leave the cat(of course mine got lost) and get a high flow muffler. I have a Banks Monster muffler and my is perfect for me. Donaldson, MBRP and others have high flow mufflers that all sound pretty good. A high flow muffler and air intake mod will help EGTs a little and maybe spool a little quicker.

I like mine!

I had mine straight piped with the cat still on with about 500 miles on it. If I'm on the highway between 65-80, it is loud with the windows down, but it is bearable with the windows up. I just hit the Woodward dream cruise last night and there was a ton of people to ask about the truck and complimented on the sound. I love the sound of the straight pipe. It sounded great with the factory pipes I went ahead and got the pipes with my Big Hoss Bundle and replaced the factory pipes the aftermarket Banks pipes just because they were smoother and better looking. I would do it if you want to, just a suggestion, keep your muffler incase you don't like it.

Weld an Aeroturbine 4040L to your downpipe, run the leftover 400-series SS factory tubing past the cab & your done... sounds awesome, but not annoying!
