"regular" 4 speed auto vs 5 speed auto

hey -

Will I regret buying a 4 speed auto trans vs a 5 speed auto trans in a 2004 2500/diesel... I will not be using it use work/etc.. just a really nice camping trailer (smaller type) sometime later on....

ps: 4x4, 3.73 gears, 4 speed auto.. short bed.. 600

I don't think so either .... but they should, that fifth gear might be what this truck needs for getting the mileage it should.

When they say 4 speed with overdrive they mean that 4th is overdrive, not that it's a 5 speed trans.

You won't be dissapointed in the tranny they offer. See my signature, I have 30K and this rig runs.. She got better when I went to the 315's and recalibrated the speedo(service dept) put her right in the power band @ 70 to 80.. If you are not going to work her to heavy you won't go wrong.
Now on to the subject 2: Increase in Engine Output.. You say you will not not modify the truck, but you will, some soon than others
This is the area of much debat on this forum(and great knowlage of what works & not) and the limitation of the automatic. Dodge has updated the tranny and the R48 is a good unit but has limitations. The increase from the stock output is around 100 hp and 150 foot pounds of torque(my exact figures are part of the debate so just take them as a ballpark figure)after this she will fail eventaully depending how hard you push..
This is the expensive part, the tranny can be set to handle a lot, but it is not cheap..
I personally am waiting( and learning from others, AK, Doug, Scotty, Just a few that come to mind)till the 70K warrenty expires. Then the real fun begins. Tranny 1st, turbo 2nd, injectors 3rd, till death to the checking account is reached.
Good luck on your decision
