Rebuilding the 48re

I have rebuilt trannies before (350,400 turbo,700r4,c6) but not the 48re. Just wondering how hard they are to do and if you need any special tools or not or if I should just let someone else do it. I have talked to dusty and dave but still not sure exactly what I'm going to do. Both are super nice guys but I like the fact of lifetime warranty on the tc from dave. So lets hear it---do it myself or let someone else?

When I talked to Dave he said if you have rebuilt any auto the 48re is pretty simple. It's basically a similar version of the torqueflite.

That's kinda what I was thinking but wasn't sure. I'm leaning toward doing it myself.

Try it yourself, I lay everything out on a board with saw horses, it's actually fun. Last time I rebuilt a GM 4l80e, and went all out and replaced the pressed in bearings, so I took certain pieces to a tranny shop that had the correct jigs to press bearings. They asked me why I was changing out the bearings. I guess all they change are the seals and plates.Good thing is ,they didn't take any money, not even a tip for pressing the parts out. Save some headaches, search on line for the hand tool that helps you compress the seals to get the clutches back together without tearing a seal.

I had access to all the goodies at work, but basically found the following tools on this link necessary.

T-1318, T-1301, T-3210

Go for it!

Just don't do a "drop the pan in the garage valve body shift-kit quickie rebuild" or it'll probably sound the death knell for the tranny...

Just download a service manual at http://hemitruckclub.com/. No special tools are really needed excpet at a minimum a 3 ton arbor press o take apart the overdrive unit to replace the clutch packs.

....The tools I listed come in pretty handy for OD disassembly/assembly. Aligning the splines in the OD. Measuring end play for proper intermediate shaft end play spacer....and measuring for correct OD piston thrust plate thickness.
