Rear end oil change question

I just changed oil in the rear end (4.10). I pumped four quarts in it. Is the oil suppose to run out the fill hole to be full? I can stick my pinky in the hole and feel the oil. It is close to the bottom of the fill hole, but is is not running out.

The oil that came out looked like muddy water. It was foamy too. I put in Amsoil 75/140. I tow alot. I think Dodge goes to the junk yard to get rear end covers. My was so rusty. I cleaned it up and repainted. I noticed they use red locktite on the bolts too. I used blue when reinstalling.

Thumbs up Rear end exspresso?

Everything sounds right. I get four in it then I get the rear wheels off the ground. I let it run in gear at idle and finish filling it then. It gets about another 1/2 qt that way and I know it is full while it's going down the road. Since you have a stock rear cover, did you notice the fill mark on the outside? It says fluid level alot lower than the hole. But hey you're almost doing an oil change (4.5 qts).

I used blue as well. Yeah it seems that the covers had something like cosmoline on them and then Dodge painted over that. NICE!

The 06s hold 4.2 quarts with the limited slip diff per the 06 service manual.

Reel Native, all those other goodies in your signature are far more expensive than a PML rear diff cover!!!! !

I agree the rear diff cover, and the front one as far as that goes, both look like they came from a bone yard.... And if you look at the seat runners in the cab, they are rusting, and if you put in a new stereo like I did you'll notice the steel in the dash is rusting... Dodge makes a cheap truck! Tranny lines leak, U-joints fail under 30,000 miles, ball joints fail right away, cargo capacity is unrealistically low, fuel pumps fail... I'll say it again, I bought a Cummins, too bad it came with a Dodge attached.

I thought the 06 manual said "NOT" to use limited slip?

correct you do not use additive but you use 4.2 quarts of gear lube when you have the LSD option.

guys ever since i changed my rear diff oil i can smell the diff oil when i get in and out of my truck and i even smelt it sitting at a light today. any idea what it could be? i dont think i have any leaks. i was thinking of cleaning the pumpkin off with simple green or something like that to neutrialize the diff oil spilled on it.

I went back and topped off the rear end yesterday. Now to see if it makes any noise. I didn't put the additive in. Shouldn't need it but I'll find out this weekend. I'm pulling my toyhauler several hundred miles. Thanks for all the inputs.

Good choice on the gear lube. I used Severe Gear when I changed mine at about 38k miles. Filled it to about the same spot that you did, and haven't had a single problem.
