rear end
Took mine to the dealer and they said that the half moons where the spiders are showing are from machining for clearence when they make them. I asked them why there was metel shavings hanging off them and they said it's normal, something about "hooks" that wear into the carrier, they said all of the this style limited slip rears look like this.
They said that my complaint is documented so if I have any trouble with it they will take care of it. My truck only has 15,000 miles on it so at 35,000 I will have it checked again. I have a 7 year 70,000 mile bumper to bumper warrentee I bought extra so I'm good for awhile.
I have a freind who knows a service tech at another dealer and he is going to show him the picture of the carrier and see what he says.

All The New Stuff Is Sitting On The Floor And The New Carrier Looks Just Like The Old One Wit Hall The Half Moons Cut In It. We Tore The Old Stuff Apart And "cleaned" The Baked Oil Off Of Every Thing And Put It Back Togather. I Have Had No Problems To Date. All The Bearings Look Like New And Showed No Sign Of Wear For 200k Miles. Got A Bunch Of New Parts F/s
Just changed my diff fluid and noticed I had the exact same gears showing through irregular-sized holes in the carrier housing. There were absolutely NO metal shavings in the diff. There was a very small amount of metal "powder" on the plug magnet. The oil was light brown. Paint on cover was intact.
Those gears that are showing through are for the limited slip. These AAM axles use gears to transmit torque, not clutches.
My vote is that the irregular sized holes and gears showing through is normal.
I just posted pictures in my gallery showing the gears and fluid color.
