Rear Brakes sticking?

I just got home from and aweful smell as soon as I got out of the truck. It appears like the rear drivers brake had hung up. I could feel the rim and it was very hot. All of the other rims were cool to the touch.

I took off the tire and tapped on the caliper to see if I could see it move one way or the other. Checked the emergency brake to be sure it was not on. Depressed emergency on/off a few times. While I had the rear end jacked up I could tell the tire would not move very easily. After tapping on caliper with hammer using a piece of wood on the caliper I could spin the tire fairly easy. Took a drive and it does not appear to be hanging up.

What should I be looking for? Do the pins get replaced on these to help the caliper float? Could the actual caliper be going bad? I will be taking a little longer drive in awhile to bring one of my kids to basketball practice and I was going to see if it is getting warm again?

Any help appreciated.. Jeff

Take it apart and lube the slides, rails, and pins with some Silicone grease meant for brakes. Don't get any on the pads or rotor thou....

My rear outside pads were wore out at 65K, inside and front are good.

Thumbs up Me too

Open the bleeder screw and collapse the piston in completely. A small ring of rust has formed on the piston and not allowing it to retract. Collapsing the piston will break this ring off and lube the bolts/pins for the caliper. Also lube any place where the caliper touches the slides (small tin pieces snapped on the caliper bracket). I use anti-sieze on mine. Same thing happened to me on the way home one night. Best part is that I was behind a big box truck and could smell it, thinking the whole time boy that guys brakes need to be looked at. Get home, it was mine. Also noticed the pedal didn't go down very far.
