Anyone here ever run re tread tires?. A friend has known some people that have run re tread tires from "tread wright". I looked them up on line, and they have good prices. Online reviews have been 97% good. my current mich tires have 30k and are all but shot. I'm sick of paying 1,000 + for 4 tires. 285/70/17 currently running.
I understand your thoughts on the steer tires, but I'm thinking of tractor/trailers..I know they can't run them on steer, but think of the weight and "dragging" of the rear trailer tires on slow, sharp turns. That's why I'm here...for thoughts/comments. Thanks!
Well that is exactly my point, you can lose a rear and hopefully not cross 4 lanes of traffic at 80 mph, your chances drop considerably when you have a catastrophic blow out on the front tire....which is much more likely to happen with a retread.
Some things like yours and your passengers lives are just too precious to gamble on the power of glue.

It is probably going to be cheaper per mile driven just to buy new tires. What kind of use do you do with the truck?
Blowout on the rear can be bad news too. Rear swerves out, puts you a little sideways, and there are 18 wheelers at speed close around.

A retreaded tire is going to be considerably heavier than a virgin tire, in general. There are several considerations as well; How well does the retreader inspect the casing, do they repair the casing or simply spray in a lining based on the casing passing inspection, what are their inspection standards, what is their failure rate, warranty, treadwear, etc, etc. I have run retreads in the past on a pick-up truck and had no issues. If you do decide to do it I recommend "Bandag" technology.

I have 97K on my original set of Mich tires....rotated every 5000 miles. Not the greatest off the pavement but they wear like steel and perform good on the road both wet and dry. Sounds like you have other issues going on.

My first thought was WOW! Only 30k on Michelin tires????? Better look into why this happened before going to ANY other tire.
With that said, I had a friend in high school that drove a Nissan 4x4 truck and ran re-treads for years. His dad ran them on a 1/2 ton daily driver also and would not run anything else. In my personal opinion I would never run a re-tread on a 3/4 ton and up truck just for safety reasons.

my tires are mich ltx m/s 2 . I like the pick of tghe zx14 by the way!. I drive basically empty 80% of the time. when i pull it's under 8k. 60% city/40% hwy. I had both front hub u joints replaced withing the last year. the tires are wearing even, any the truck does not wonder/pull. I have no idea. The originals went at about 30k and were junk. I now have 61k on the truck.
I tried hot caps from Mont. Wards in the early 70s and they blow off worse than the STs do now so I had them changed to new tires. That's about the time the Bandag cold caps (cold valcanizing) got started. Everyone I knew that used Bandag had good luck. I just did a search on bandag cold cap and they are still around. They used to be in most of the big cities. Craig
