random high idle in my 'new' 03

hey guys! love the site and glad to be able to get back on! i appologize for this long post in advance but ive got afew concerns. i wrote off my old 94 afew weeks ago in a terrible roll over, when some idiot cut me off on the freeway while going to visit my parents and picked up a 03 afew days later. love the new truck but its got afew issues with it and ive discovered afew things that really scare me.
its a crew cab, 6 sp, w a leveling kit and airbags with 198k on it. afew times before i changed all the fluids and filters in it while it was at idle it all of the sudden ran really rough for a second or two and then went back completely normal. discovered later that the truck had no feul filter when i bought it, and that there was sediment in the bottom of the feul filter canister!!!! yikes!!! what can i expect to die on me in this thing in the near futur due to this? it seems to be running totaly normal at the moment, but what would the warning signs be that things are going wrong?

also this thing seems to have a really random 'high idle' for lack of a better term. say i shift at 2000rpm, it will drop slightly, hang up there for just a second at like say 1850, and then drop back to normal. then if i come to a stop it will stay at about 1000 or 1100 rpm for abit then drop down to a normal idle. i can make it drop from this higher idle to normal by dragging the clutch a little but im not sure if this is normal or what?!?

thanks 4 ur help in advance guys!!!

Obviously, you are going to get just random guesses without being able to troubleshoot and lack of better info.

The lack of fuel filter is significant to me for two things:
1. If this is still the stock fuel pump, it has already lived way beyond expectations and is producing too low of pressure to overcome filter restriction. Remove the filter, truck runs better, easier to sell. If this is indeed the stock lift pump, I'd consider this to be the first purchase and replace with good aftermarket like FASS or GDP.
2. Lack of filter and sediment in the housing = NOT GOOD! Seriously, that unfiltered sediment making its way to the injectors can and will do great harm. I hope you are lucky and have not already ruined one or more injectors. That sediment can also harm the cp3, but the stix are your main concern.

I don't know about the high idle... it is possible that it could be a result of the injectors starting to go bad and sticking or something... I'm just really guessing there and don't know.

thanks for the reply!

what egzactly is a CP3?? if the lift pump was going bad and i jumped on the throttle could this cause the truck to fall flat on its face and then seem to run completly normal right after?

the other day i hammered on it abit, and it seemed to cut out. i thought it was just the tires spun or something at the time (music cranked up, not paying attention to the truck) but now im not so sure....

the random high idle, and the rpm hang are completely normal, mine has done it since the get go, and they both are really annoying but you'll get used to those issues. The truck cutting out when you laid into it probably means your lift pump is going bad, but not 100% sure.

Yeah my '03 does the random high idle too. Can't remember if my old one did this. 91k miles on it.
