random high idle???

hey guys, last night coming home from a truck GTG i noticed when i got home that my truck randomly was idling about 200 RPM higher than it ever has before, It usually idles around 750 but last night it was idling around 950 or 975. I did nothing out of the ordinary with it except on the way home a buddy and were playing around on the road where had come up beside me and then id accelerate up maybe 10 MPH then back down, we did that maybe 4 times but thats it. I cant imagine that that would cause my idle to ramp up like it has.

Is there anything i could/would/should check as to why itd be ramped up to almost 1000 RPM from a normal 750 RPM. My initial thought was APPS but i have no surging or dead pedal or anything to associate it with.

So any suggestions would be good, id like my truck to idle back where it always has @ 750 RPM

The PCM and ECM decide whether to idle the truck at regular idle or "cruise idle". They look at various factors (speed, altitude, time, moon phase, etc.) and control the idle speed. It's normal and happens for reasons beyond our understanding or control....

I just recently had the same thing start happening intermittently on my truck. What sheriffav8r said makes sense as I have always noticed that there are 2 idle speeds, a cruise idle and a low idle. It normally seems to switch to low idle at speeds below about 10 mph. Now mine will sometimes stay at the cruise idle even when stopped. If I had to take an educated guess, I'd say that whatever sensor it is that tells the ECM/PCM the vehicle's speed may be at fault.

Hello so I have a similar problem with my 12v running at 200 rpms above normal but it is stuck and won't drop back down to 750/ 800 rpm. Any suggestions

Check your throttle linkage and cable. My 1st gen does that from time to time.
As for the original poster, mine does that when the temperature is around freezing. Warmer or colder, it's fine.

I'm guessing the original poster may have figured it out in the ten years since he started this thread, or maybe he just gave up and sold the truck......Ben

And he should have put it in the 12V section..

I second cougar on the linkage if it's a 12V, but I also saw some crap sticking to the idle adjust screw- some tin foil wedged in there, idle was around 1200..
