Dodge 2500 "Light"

Just realized I put this in the wrong category and can't figure out how to move it but anyway...

I had to weigh my truck today for CA registration. It came in at just over 6700. I thought it was over 7000 empty for a 2500 4x4. Anyone think this sounds light?

Also, they gave me the bill of almost $1500. My "you know what" still hurts! I bought this thing 8 months ago and CA charged me the sales tax difference that I didn't pay to the state previously lived in (when I bought the truck). Specifically, CA sales tax is 2.5% higher so I had to pay another $900 in sales tax. I can't believe this is legal.

- bummer, that's really gotta hurt!

....my state is filling up with people from the People's Republik of Kalifornia, I wonder if the insane taxation has something to do with the residents there leaving in droves?

Wonder if they would refund you if you had paid higher sales tax in the state you came from?

I paid ZERO sales tax because Illinois had a tax exemption in you put "D" plates on it. Hmmmm...let's see. Pay 80 bucks a year for "B" plate registration and pay 6.5% tax on the truck OR pay 150 bucks a year for "D" plate registration and not pay ANY tax on the truck. I understand this exemption is gone now?

Just asking qualifying questions...
Did you move INTO Ka after you bought the truck?
Or, did you buy the truck out of state, then re-register it to avoid sales tax?

Check with DMV office. There may be a law stating that if you moved into another county or from another state and the vehicle is <1yr old, they asses the difference in tax....money grubbers! bloody deep pocket state!

You got a recipt, right? You should be able to write off the taxes on your federal return.

Bad juju! Glad I moved!

Tony

Be glad that it is that light....CA GVWR registration and trailer registration is getting CRAZY!!!!

If you drive a commersial vehical in CA in must AT ALL TIMES weight less than 8000lbs of you are subject to hefty fines (and we have plenty of DOT highway patrol trucks around here that love to harrass us "mini semi" drivers). If you need to be over 8000lbs commecially then you must declair your "registered max GVW" and pay the assosiated charges, they also make you display a sticker stating the registered max GVW like 40 for 40,000lbs.

So....my 06 2500 has a standard under 8000lbs commercial reg. and it is about 600 a year.......my 04.5 is registered at 40K....registration cost about 3g's a year for that one!!!!! The only up side to this is that I no longer have to pay annual reg. on my 4 commercial trailers!!!!

BTW...this is only for commercial use in CA....RV's are different, they must get reg'ed annually and do not count twards the registered max GVW.

That and the gang banger crime that is going on in Northern/Central CA where I live is enough to make us seriously consider leaving.

I just had mine weighed 20 minutes ago on CAT scales. It came in at 6960 with me in the truck adding my 200 lbs. This is also with a full tank of fuel and no hitch in the receiver.

I bought the truck 8 months ago when I lived in the NE and now moved back to CA. I think you're probably right about the less than 1 year old thing. I figured if I let the current reg expire and then went in, there would be fines for having an unregistered vehicle. I figure they'd get me one way or the other.
