Ram 2500 5.9 diesel

Hi I would like information about the differences of rear differentials ie. 4:1 or 3:1 ratio or there abouts. Is the higher the number for highway driving and better mileage? would the higher ratio differential make a difference in towing a large fifth wheel trailer? Thanks George

With the auto trans you'll want the 4.11s for towing heavy. With the manual you can get away with the 3.73s (if you can find one set up that way that is). Also depends on tire size, anything over 285/70sR17s and you'll want the 4.11s for towing heavy regardless of trans.

3.73s return the best mpgs empty going down the highway.

I went from a 3.54 CTD 5 spd which sucked on hilly 2 lane 55 mph roads and 1st/rev were way fast for creeping/backing up hills to this 4.10 CTD for the towing power, closer trans gear spacing and creeping. I have never regretted it! I'm never on the open hiway/long trips w/o my RV. It might be a different story if I were so 4.10s are perfect for me. Craig
