quiet diesel

Hi gang...new to the forum,

I'm considering buying a 2003 to 2005 ram 2500 quad cab with HO cummings diesel (my first diesel).

Is there any difference in noise level between the standard diesel (I realize the standard diesel is not HO), the 305hp 555lb-ft, and the 325 hp 610 lb-ft?

Thanks

My 99 was very loud around the front, couldn't go through the drive thru without shutting it down. The 06 is very quiet, not sure bout the 05s though.

With my 06 I can go through the drive-thrus without shutting off the engine. It has actually gotten quieter as it is breaking in. And, I would say that it is not very loud at all. But, it is louder than a gas engine.

Noise was a concern of mine before purchasing too. This is my first diesel and I was worried that my wife would not enjoy the sound of the truck pulling into the drive at 4am. So, I had her stand in the parking lot of the dealer as I pulled away and back in so she would understand how loud it is/isn't. We drove the Chevy and Ford the same day and she (my wife) said the Ford was the loudest with the Chevy close behind and the Dodge made the least amount of sound outside the truck. She was actually suprised at how loud the Chevy was at idle.

I've got an '05 & it seems pretty quiet. The only time it seems loud though (not to me though), is when I am ordering @ the drive-thru. I always have to shut it off because I am sitting at just the right height to make it hard for them to hear me. I have a friend w/ an '05 Duramax Chevy & he thought I had the Hemi until he shut it off & heard the chirp. Even he was impressed w/ its quietness!

I think you guys mis understood his question. He is asking if the standard 305 HP 555 Is at the same noise level as the H.O. 325 HP 610. Atleast that is the way i understand it. I could be wrong.
I can tell you that my 05' is extremely quiet for a diesel . My wife wants me to put on the muffler delete so I has the rattle our 01' had.. She didn't have to twist my arm much to convince me to do it !!!

I have the 305/555 I think it is about the same as the 325/610 , maybe a little louder not much though. Sometimes I think mine is louder than some other 305's but then i think they get louder as they get more miles on them. I have 240,000kms(150,000miles) But it is still pretty quiet for a diesel.

I'm not being a smart but you should know it is "Cummins". Good luck and enjoy your truck when you find one.

If the Chevy is louder than your Dodge I definitely have problems with my truck. My neighbor just got a new Duramax and it literally is half as quiet as mine, if not more. I have had many issues with my truck so far and have always said is does not sound like other CTD's. Is yours really quieter than the Duramax? Thanks.

Mines loud and has gotten louder as time goes on. it was quite till I towed when all says they have less noise after towing. I am always pulling my dip stick looking at the oil seeing if it coming up. had it looked at and they all say yep its loud but it run's good. sounds like to me its ready to fall apart or take a dump

I've never heard a cummings engine run so I won't be of any help there, but I did own an '03 Cummins that was a tad bit more noisy than this '06 Cummins but even the '03 was twice as quiet as the 2nd gens.

The 600 series is probably quieter because of the cat in the way. Rico334 long time no read, haven't seen you around in awhile.

I have a 305 555 much , much quieter than the 2nd gen. especially when cold.(nothing wrong with the second gen...just really loud when cold)
From what I have read the 04.5s and up are even quieter.
These things are a little louder in the winter when first started, but once they are moving they quiet down alot.
If you are worried about the neighbors, just get the thing started, let it idle for no more than 30 seconds, just to get the oil circulating, and just move off easy for awhile. Don't really put the coal to her till the oil thins out a bit.
Won't warm up idling anyway and hard on the engine.

After I got my injectors, mine is quieter than just about any other 5.9CTD I've heard. Even the newest one's. Had a guy pull up to me at a FlyingJ the other day in a LBZ Duramax and he asked what engine I had in mine (this all happened by the way with the green pump handle sticking out the tank and the truck running at the diesel only RV lane) and looked puzzled when I told him it was a Cummins. The new Duramax is by far the quitest out there and mine was only slightly louder as long as it was warmed up.

Before the injectors, even then I rarely had to shut it off at a drivethru. Never have to now though.
