Quick U-joint question

Local auto parts store showed a u-joint for my 2005 Dodge Ram QC/SB 4x4 rear driveshaft for $115.00 EACH special order

I asked them to look up a U-joint for an '04, '06 & '07 Those showed Not-available.

So we looked up a '03. Bingo they had them. $15 each

Are the REAR 1 piece driveshaft '03 u-joints the same application as the '05?? The drive shaft looks the same as my '07.

TIA!

That 03 joint for $15 can't be right. Mine are about $100 and the same as an 04 auto or manual (the only comparison I checked).

A $15 u-joint won't hold up in your truck, or it's a hell of a deal .

two years ago, i paid around 40-50 bucks for a spicer greaseable u-joint. you get what you pay for- i would not expect a 15.00 u-joint to last very long on a diesel pick up. to each their own-they say!

WTH guys? I asked if the '03 u-joint is the same as a '05 u-joint, not if you thought I was buying a POS joint.

Anyway, nobody sells locally spicer or I would have TWO in my hand. I put almost 200 miles a day on my truck for work. I use it normally on the highway and in the oilfield. I need to replace these this week since mine are toast and the vibration is really annoying, so I don't have time for a down truck while I wait to order a Spicer.

FWIW, these u-joints are the Autozone Duralast brand. They are big, look like they have quality alloy/forging attributes and are greasable. The Checker GMB ones are $19. I also have a resae account, so the price is usually quite lower than retail.

TIA Again!

Thank you.

Sorry. I just confirmed that the 03 manual (mine) is the same as 04 man and auto, don't know 05 for sure but I doubt it changed. I just suspected that the one you had doesn't sound right at $15. A heads up, not a criticism. The 03 auto is a different number.

Measure both U- joints across the diameter of the caps and across both crosses. If the measurements are the same as the ones on your truck, they'll fit. Measure both ways, I don't know how they do it on our trucks but Ford used to be famous for having two different sized caps and crosses on the same joint.

Thank you. I forgot to mention I do have an auto, and you do show different part #'s? Interesting, since the computer at the part stores did not specify or ask for trans type, just if it was diesel and if it was the two piece or one piece shaft.

I will try to measure with them in the truck tomarrow. I don't want to dissasemble them yet if the ones I have won't work. I have to be able to get home, which is in another state. I have full cababilities/tools to dissasemble & reassemble them in the field and there are no part stores where I will be at.

TIA

I got the auto out of your signature. The 03 auto was also the SO engine, lower HP, smaller u-joint. At least that was the info and numbers given to me at the time.

Cya and good luck

The 03's with the HO engine had a larger series drive shaft and u-joints than the 03 SO's, so make sure which one you are looking at. I do not know if they are the same as the 05.

Well they fit and work. I finally got some time to get them in.

FWIW, the parts store did not have any designation on the SO and HO motors or the transmission type. Just one part # for the 2003.

Anyway it worked

Seems odd that a parts store would not have the different part numbers for parts that are actually different. Sounds like someone screwed up the data input somehow.

Maybe you should buy a couple of spares before they figure it out .

I'm dealing with this right now . what I found out for those who have not been through this yet the u joint from a-zone -duralast = brute force hd u joint.. if you go ta advance auto you get a brute force in a brute force box

The kicker to this is if you have a 2 joint rear shaft and a 6 speed tranny you get a really large u joint. the the one for the auto and 5 speed trannys are the same part number and the bearing cap diameter is 1.187 ....the bearing cap diameter for the six speed 2 joint drive shaft is 1.375

I found out the the hard way i bought the brute force hd from advance auto for $15 with the lifetime warrenty.... they were non greasable I really wanted to be able to grease them so i stop by auto zone to see if they had them in the greasable model that is when i found out I was sold the wrong parts and that your heart can stop for a sec and you will be ok WHAt !!! $115 each for the u joints... they didnt have them . the guy was cool though he called around and found them for $34 each at napa so I went there and ordered them this morning...fwiw they are $54 each at advance they have to be ordered ;if you find one with a counter person that pays attention to what they are selling..

Special order you said? Chances are they will call a Chrysler parts store to get it. Or you can pay a visit to one, if it's near by.
