Questions about water/fuel trap on 03

So you guys help me out with this. The little yellow lever
on the drivers side that you turn to drain water from the
fuel filter (i think)...I've done this a few times now and
each time its drained diesel fuel all over the driveway.
Is this normal?...Is there water being drained also?
How long do you drain this?

Thanks

Get under your truck and put a 2liter bottle or catch can of some sort under the fuel filter drain hose. Saves the driveway/garage from the mess. Most likely it's just fuel and not water, but should you get a really bad tank of fuel, it's possible it would stop some water. I don't have a lot of confidence in the filter's water separating ability at all.

Pull the lever and drain the whole filter housing when you change fuel filters. Don't forget to change the o-ring, and before starting prime the filter by turning the key to on and leaving it there for 15-20 secs a few times.

Check your manual, but I think it's every 15,000 miles.

Yes, drain it completely, and I'd only drain it at filter changes. I plan on doing filter changes every 10K, I think the manual recommends 15.

Has anyone ever had the water in fuel sensor light up (other than after hosing down the engine bay)? I have 6600 mi on my rig so far and it's never lit up.-Steve

I've got almost 10k on my 03. About 4k of that was pulling 11k. I've gone through a few tanks of diesel with no water yet. Then there was that 10+ year period as a teamster and still no water in that diesel either. YMMV

15,000 miles, and have yet to see the light come on. i believe the mannual says to drain that thing at every fuel-up. seems like a waste to me.i`v done mine 3x so far, and no water was found.

BTW, a small 20oz soda bottlw fits in there perfect. put the hose in the bottle, and place the bottle on the front axel.use a clear dry bottle, and look for h2o.

75,000 miles on my '98.5 24v. No water light. The one time I did get some bad diesel, the light didn't come on then either.
