Smile A question about the reflash for early 600

I have a early 04.5 600 that runs great. The only problem the truck had was the cab engine fumes, which I fixed. This is one nice truck and I have about 1500 miles on it. My question is, should all the Cummins engines that fall into the service bulletin #18-007-04 build dates be reflashed? We have not had the 30 degree "F" temperatures here and not a chance now until next year.

My .02 would be to run the latest/greatest calibrations. You may not be having the problem. But you may not have encountered the exact conditions (temp, load, fuel, altitude...) that make the problem happen. Why wait, get it fixed now under warranty, it's quick with a *very* low risk that the dealer will break something while fixing something else.

Personally, I hate the dealers and if your truck is running fine and you love it, I wouldn't give them the chance to mess it up.

2 cents

Didn't fix my miss anyway. Lemon process started, dealer final attempt 17th. District manager called today to set up final attempt. I will not accept replacement truck unless it is 305 engine. It does not have cat., 3phase injection (that wastes fuel), and annoying valve clatter. Oh , and the miss! With a chip 305 will be stronger and get better mileage. I wonder when emmisions testing will begin on post Jan 1 diesels, you know its comming. What will happen to all that have cut off cat.?

Those who have cut off the cat,had better kept it.Testing is coming.Just think of the huge untapped revenue for cash strapped states.Just a matter of time, imo.

Your using the same amount of fuel, it just makes the injections smaller and uses more of them........

Then why does the fuel mileage fall off the map?

I work for a large fleet that runs mostly Cummins. Thursday the area rep for
Cummins was in and I asked him about the reflash for the new 600. He told
me to get it done if I was having the problem or not. He said it will make the
engine run better overall.

Its hard to say. as I dont own, nore have I actually seen one. But I am aware of how common rail works. Real quick here lets jump back to the older 24vs You have one injection and get all ur power from that. Which today doesnt pass new emmision laws for a reason. The smoke/raw fuel is the problem. and we use to fix that with more heat. But once we got too warm then they started getting other polutants ( hence the cats) the single injection was dropped for that reason. Think of it this wya. You have a basketball size drop of fuel. and also have a baseball size drop of fuel. since the fuel burns from the outside in the baseball size drop will be all used while the bball is still buringin... usually up till the exhaust stroke. Throwing unburnt fuel into the air. Im sure everyones aware how the spray patterns and fuel presures make the smoke go away..... because they make the droplets smaller and more efficent. Now the thing is when you use a smaller amount of fuel at higher presures, you get better emmisions but obviously less power due to the lower fuel amount at injection. So then they add more injections per cycle. Which gives even more power than a single injection using the same amount of fuel, and gives you better emmissions. And im sure someon more experienced can probably clairify it more

So whats causing the poor mileage, could be a new injector, new timming, diffrent pulse rates, and maybe the new 600 is using more fuel the the 03 HO to get its power. I really dont know.

I am sure though that dodge/cummins is aware of this problem. Like it was said. Loss of sales could result.

Bought mine new in Spokane Wa and drove it to Fairbanks AK towing a 24ft jet boat. I did not notice the miss until I got to northern B.C.. I really believe temp, load hills etc make the problem really show up. My advice to you is to get the flash you never know when you will run into the "right conditions". As for the fuel mileage issues. New out of the gate driving the ALCAN towing my mileage improved steadily from 8.5 to 10.5 mind you crossing the rockies, towing, in and out of snowstorms ice etc. Now here in Fairbanks AK at -20F burning winter diesel, extensive idle time to warm this cold blooded thing up, in and out of 4 wheel drive, I am getting around 11.5. Hey I'm happy the 2002 Ford PSD I traded in only got 8.5 in these extreme conditions.

Question

Does the following, need to be "enabled", with the 18-007-04 reflash or is "on" with the reprogramming? (The new engine controller software includes a change that allows automatic transmission vehicles to lock the torque converter clutch when a manual 2nd gear downshift is selected.

Got the Reflash today"18-007-04". I now have the 2nd gear lockup upgrade. The engine still runs great and seems even quicker. Very smooth power. I hope everyone's new Cummins can run this good.
