Quantity of Oil - Service Interval
Quantity of Oil - Service Interval
Hey guys! This just dawned on me tonight. My truck is an 05. I put in 11 quarts of oil at each change. When I go to drain the oil at each interval change, why does it seem like only about 7 to 8 quarts comes back out? I know all the oil doesn't come back out as put in during service. Hopefully someone will chime in. Thanks!
I usually put all 3 gallons in. Puts the oil level right at the top with the oil filter filled up.
Where is the oil on the dipstick right before you do an oil change ? 8 qts. in the crank doesn't seem like it should be in the safe zone but I'm not really sure. that's a gallon low.

Have you ever got a 12 quart bucket and drained it? They sell the blue bucket in the auto detail section at wal-mart. If you change your oil like I do, try draining in the bucket and see if it hits the top almost. Just make sure you have an extra stand by in case yours goes over. Be a big mess if not!

Check it by filling 1 gallon milk jugs or some other well known measuring method. I would speculate the wash bucket you are using does not have a true measurment line, more of a "general area" mark..
I use a nominal 3 gal. bucket and it always looks like the right amount came out. Usually those plastic buckets are about 2" below the rim when they are at rating and that's about where mine is minus the oil in the filters. You need to measure and not guess! Craig

i buy (3) gal containers of shell rotella 15w40 and the mopar oil filter.
after oil change the oil level is right at the top mark of dip stick.
I alway check the oil in the mornings after truck has set all night, to get the best reading.
so far its always been at the top, no oil usage, 62K miles.
you need to figure it out, as you do not want to run your truck low of oil or have too much oil in motor can also cause problems.
