Hey guys I need some advice, My buddy blew up his 2005 stock dodge 3500 cummins last week. I recently bought a complete wrecked 2002 Dodge cummins for the tranny and now would like to sell/swap motors with him to get his truck back on the road. Put the 2002 block in the 2005. Is this possible with minimal expense and what do I need to do to make it work? I am mechanically inclined and have all the tools just don't know much about these CR motors.

I would think that basically the block would be the only swapped piece. The electronics, head, cp3 all need to be changed over to the older engine.....that would be a starting point.

 

There totally different motors. What transmission is in the 05 truck? If its an manual transmission you could install the old motor if you convert it to the P7100 injection pump and get aftermarket injection lines. Then you would have to figure out a way to get all of the electronics to work. The tach ring (cam gear) is different from the VP engine.

Its to bad, cause I have a spare refreshed 4.5-07 common rail, new pistons 0.5mm oversized, brand new cummins head, just sitting in my garage Been trying to figure out what to do with it. I also have a few used CR engines available

 

Totally different blocks between a CR and VP engines. Same goes for the head. You can use a CR head on the VP engine, but you have to machine the VP injector cross tubes to fit. The VP has a coolant port on the intake plenum and the CR doesn't.

The 2002 donor truck has a NV5600 in it and the 2005 is an auto.

So its looking like its not really worth the hassle then???

Is the donor VP truck a 4X4 truck? Probably easier for us to trade parts. I'm looking for a manual transmission for my 2010, as my 68rfe is on its way out.
