Pre-Turbo or Post Turbo

Hello All,

I've just purchased a set of gauges for my 04.5 and have been reading quite a bit about EGT Probe placement. Some convincing arguments both ways. Which is better in your opinion? before the turbo or after?

Thank you for your time,

Pat

More accurate reading Pre Turbo... In my opinion no point in using one at all unless PRE Turbo

How many guys have or have know other people that lost turbochargers due to the probe breaking off. I am putting in gauges next week and still can't make my mind up.

Mine is Pre Turbo. I don't know of anyone who lost a turbo due to probe failure. Good luck.

I have one pre and post turbo. I only see a 100-110 deg difference between the two.

I do only have a 03 SO engine. So less fueling is going on. But do what you feel is more comfortable. Then get a base line for where is safe to run to.

Using the advice from 100 different people who have different opinions and setups is like trying to buy a new car, Everyones is the best, but really only one is the best for you.

For me below 1000 pre turbo and 950 post turbo are the safe limits for me. I wont go any higher then that,

15 years of diesel mechanic experience, never seen of nor heard of a thermocouple breaking off and killing a turbo.

I know of no one that has lost a turbo due to pyro breaking off either. Mine is pre-turbo, and to say that I am particular about my truck would be an understatment.

I have seen lots of Pyros break off.
But that is in an airplane that has up wards of 10 per engine.

I have also seen one that broke off on a pick up truck before. Good thing it wasnt a turbo vesrion.

The likely hood of a pyro breaking off is very little.
But the chance is still there. For some that is a risk they are not willing to take. For others it is a more then acceptable risk.

Your truck, your choice, and your peice of mind.
