Power surge at start up- Normal??

I have just noticed that since the weather has turned colder (30's- 40's) that when I start my truck my lights (both interior and headlights) will pulse every couple of seconds for a minute or so. This being my first diesel, I'm not sure what causes this but I'm guessing that maybe the grid heater is cycling at start up and drawing the power?? Is this normal or am I developing a Gremlin?

That is exactly what is happening. You will notice the voltmeter move with each pulse of the lights. Completely normal.

Yeap normal. It should cycle for 3 minutes or until you reach about 25mph.
Let the engine run for about 1minute prior to pulling off if it is cold when you start it up, that helps get some juice back in the batteries.

I guess the grid "cycles" to prevent it from burning up.. Sure takes a load out of the batteries.. I can hear the heater fan slow down then speed up....

200 amps when both elements are fired. That and the extra powerful starter is why we have 2 batteries.
