Question Power hesitation and surges

I just finished putting on 300 miles on my truck from a bit of a road trip and when I got into town the truck surprised me. At the first red light when I went to takeoff the engine (under constant throttle pressure) reved to ~1500 then paused, then jumped to ~1700 and paused and then again at ~1900 rpm. This was with light acceleration. I then tried accelerating harder at the next light and it happened again. It seemed to quit for 5 or 6 stop/go's but it is here again today. The power felt like it plateaued and then came back on strong when this was happening. And it isn't present everytime I accelerate.

The truck is a 2004 Dodge Ram 2500 Q-cab 4x4 6spd. I am somewhat new to the diesel world but in the gas world I would have said this was a spark plug miss.

Any experience or Ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Do you have any codes? You can turn the igination on and off three times(do not start the truck) and get the codes. If there are any that would lead you in the right direction. Code will be displayed on the milage readout screen on the gauge panel.

Thanks bhoeffner,

I wondered how to check them.
I just checked for any codes and NONE are recorded. Any idea what would cause this behavior?

I found this quote from the TSB poll:18-007-04
guidster:
I know that mine was done. Mileage was not affected. Seems smoother and the hesitation that I had from 1800-2200 is gone.
Is this all that needs to be done. I asked a fellow around the office and he said it sounded like a fuel pressure problem or injector issue.

Any thoughts?

Gearedup,

When was the last time you changed the fuel filter? Could have got a bad load of diesel and it will clear up on it's own.Is your truck a 600 or a 555. The TSB 18-007-04 is a milage reflash for the 600. From what I have read it was not to effective, however there is a new one released this month 18-037-04 which has had some really good results. If you truck is a 04 and not 04.5 then the reflash will not help you. It does sound like a fueling issue which could be caused by severial factors (e.i. lift pump, filter, cp3 pump). I would try the filter route and if that does not help I would take it to the dealer and see what they come up with. Keep us posted on the out come.
