I am hearing a popping noise from the back end when in 5 th gear above 50mph. It is not constant in time between pops. Feels like something gets caught or stuck and releases. Anyone had this issue before? Standard transmission.

Yep, that would help- it's a 2003 dodge 2500 cummins turbo, standard transmission

 

I guess an easy thing would be to see if your u joints are good.

 

It depends on which trans you have NV4500 5 speed trans or a NV5600 6 speed trans. Possible 5th gear nut is coming loose or gear is slipping on the NV 4500 common problem. If that's the case you do not want to drive it since it will damage trans until gear is replaced and new nut installed. REF SB 21-10-98 Rev. A If you only hear noise in 5th gear most likely the problem, do not use 5th gear if you need to drive truck.
