Poor MPG

I just bought an early 04 ctd and have gone through several tanks and am getting a whopping 12 mpg. What the hell? My 2000 was getting 16-20 depending on how I was driving. This truck is bone stock and has 373's. Anybody have this problem and are there any solutions?

well i am sure you know to change the fuel filter, thats a no brainer! just go through the basics and make sure the oil/filter has been changed recently, air filter is good, etc.....you might wasnt to run a good injector cleaner or fuel system cleaner for a few tanks of fuel

I dont know where you bought the truck up from, a car lot or a individual. but I always assume worst case, as far as the previous owner maintenance habits when I get a truck (USED). Since I got my truck in January, I have changed the air filter, oil/filter, fuel filter x2, fluid in both differentials, trans filter and fluid, new headlight bulbs (brighter), side marker lights, license plate lights, door seals, window tint and have done a TON of cleaning. I think I may be a little OBSESSIVE at times

AND OR COURSE, TRY NOT TO STOP THE PEDAL TO THE FLOOR FROM A STOP!!! that was my problem when I first got mine!!!

good luck with the truck.....let us know how it goes

Did you flush the brake system? One of the most important, one that hardly anyone does.

Did not to that but have done most of what was mentioned above that. Something doesn't seem right. The truck runs and sounds great. Maybe I'm one of the unlucky ones that got the truck that gets crappy mileage. Will a programmer help?

Is your truck one for which the fuel economy TSB/Reflash applies?

Don't forget to adjust your valves also.

How do you adjust the valves? Is that a dealer required repair?

I think Dodge's schedule is first one at 100,000 miles and every 150,000 after that. I believe Cummins just lists every 150,000...
