Unhappy P0628 with a twist

My truck finally gave me some trouble. Running on flat, level ground, 50mph with no load, and the truck started to stumble, missed a few times and ran like crap. I couldn't get anything more than 1800 rpm (clutch in while still rolling) before it'd die right back to a rough idle. I managed to coast it to the next cross street and find a safe parking spot before it quit altogether. I tried to restart and it cranked a few seconds longer than normal and started like there was a bit of air in the lines, then idled fine for about 15 seconds and died. I checked for codes (3 times just to be sure) and got nothing but the "done" notification. I removed the Quad Max Mileage Module and tried again with the same results. Changed the fuel filter and re-checked all the electronic connections to the fuel rail and it started and ran for abour 30 seconds then died again. This time I got the P0628 error, so I took the fuel filter out and tried to bump the lift pump to see how bad it was and got nothing. I put the filter back in, checked all the connections to the lift pump, and then beat on the side of it with a wrench before giving it one final go and it started and ran fine. I drove it home and even stood on it a few times to see if I could make it stumble and it ran fine. I still have the P0628 code after two successful starts.

Whaddya think? Wiring gremlin? Dying lift pump? Plugged fuel filter screen in the tank? To make it even better, I leave for Iraq on Tuesday and I'm supposed to drop the truck off at storage Saturday. I'm thinking about just dropping it at storage (if it starts again) and dealing with it when I get home. Give me your thoughts folks, I'm open to suggestions.

Order you a FASS or AIRDog fuel pump and get ready to put it in when you get back.

Thank You for your service.

Sounds like your lift pump is bad. Mine would re-start and run a bit too, I was able to get it home with about 10 startups.

They fail and still work just a little more.

I suggest a Walbro from Glacier Diesel. Excellent setup.

Its got 61,000 on it, so I shouldn't have a problem with a warranty repair. I just hope it'll start and get me to the storage unit. I talked to the wonderful folks at the nearest dealership (44 miles) and they can't get it in until next Friday at the earliest, so into storage it'll go. They were also pretty prompt to mention the $100 repair fee for over 5 years, but I told them I'd have it to them sometime in April 09, and the truck build is 13 May 04. Guess not many folks know how to find a build date, because they were surprised I knew.

The lift pump relocation is covered by the Cummins emissions warranty 5 years/100,000 miles and I believe that's from the purchase date, not the date of manufacture. One good thing of note, at least the dealer you called understands that the $100 charge is for work that is outside of the warranty period. There are tons of folks that have been charged the $100 deductible and shouldn't have. If you can, I'd repair it before you go. It takes about 5-6 hours for a good tech. BTW, thanks for your service and prayers for a safe return!
