overunning clutch to prevent chirp on shutdown

Worth getting? I like the chirp, but not sure if it's hurting anything long term.

That chirp is normal and does no damage at all. Simply the Cummins stops spinning real fast at shut off because of high compression. The Alternator, AC compressor, water pump etc....are still spinning and that chirp is from the belt stopping them almost as quickly as the engine.

Don't even give it a moments thought

Yeah, it is no problem and adds a little character. Mine stopped doing it about 40,000 miles ago so I guess the belt is a little more slippery now. Too bad.

Yes and no.

The chirp is not hurting anything, but, the conditions that cause the chirp can and do cause problems.

The over running clutch is to address the belt jumping 1 or 2 grooves on the damper pulley. The sudden stop creates slack in the belt when it loads/unloads the tensioner pulley quickly. It can cause the belt to walk off the damper pulley which puts it into contact with other accessories and shreds the belt.

Sometimes the cause is a slight misalignment on one of the pulleys, sometimes it is the belt, and sometimes it just plain bad luck. As the tensioner wears the chirp goes away but the slack thrown in the belt gets worse.

As far as not giving it a though, picture what a flapping piece of belt could do to the underhood components if it got loose.
