overheating upon acceleration

Guys - I have an 06 with 93K on it.

Just recently after driving it for 15+ minutes upon acceleration or city driving it will start to overheat. Probably getting to half way between 200 and the max. Sometimes getting all the way up to max.

It will come back down to normal if I let it idle. If I put it in park the truck goes into high idle mode.

The truck drives as normal except for the electic fans coming on once the temp gets up kinda high. EGT's seem normal along with boost pressure.

Any ideas as to what is causing this. I was planning at 100K to flush any and all fluids. Oil was just changed 1K ago.

Thanks,

Jay

Which elec fans do you have?

Have you flushed the coolant and changed the thermostat yet?

It seems like the thermostat is sticking, but check your radiator for debris/mud/etc.

At 45K my thermostat was all over the place, I replaced the sender, no more issues. I did not experience the high idle problem, could be the sender might be your problem too ???

If the problem would have continued, the thermostat would have been next.

Some have had water pump issues with the 2006's as well.

I have not done anything yet. I suspect it is the thermostat and coolant needing to be changed. I have owned the truck since 32K and never done that service as of yet.

Any good way to check if the thermostat is sticking or I should just replace.

thanks,

Jay

I would just replace it with the coolant flush, they are cheap.

Have you checked for codes? There is a code that is thrown for the fan clutch when it fails. At 90K miles I had the same type of symptoms, and that is what the problem was.

If you have to get into the fan clutch, the LISLE fan clutch wrench set p/n LISLE41730 is reallygood to have, the wrenches are slim and fit the job perfectly.
