Overfill 48 re?

i read somewhere that it was better for the 48 re to be overfilled by 1-2 quarts? is this true?
i will be doing a trans filter change and trans go kit soon. is there any way to drain the tc? i know some cars have a bolt on them that you can take out and drain the fluid like on my old police interceptor.
thanks for the input

It adds a little more to the stock pan. I run 1-2 over full all the time. As long as its notfoaming and coming out the vent your good.

I have been told it can be overfilled....i had some work done to mine and he told me he overfilled it about 1 quart. The tranny leaked for a few weeks, not a big leak, and then stopped....i guess it leaks until it has what it wants? As for draing the tc, after dropping the pan and changing the filter, replace the pan and fill to full. Get 2 helpers. You get under the truck and disconnect the return line from the trans cooler. You will need a container big enough to hold 12 qts to let the fluid drain to. Have a helper start the truck and put it in neutral, pump will not move fluid in park, while the other helper feeds fluid into the fill tube as fast as it will take it. When enough fluid has been added to make 12 qts including what you used to fill the pan, stop adding fluid. While the fluid is being pumped out you should take note of the color and when it changes and gets to be a bright red to match the new fluid (this might be difficult depending on the condition of the used fluid) have the helper in the truck put it back in park and trunk it off. Reconnect the return line and fill till full. I have done it this way many times and never had a problem. Expect to use a few quarts more than capacity calls for due to the old and new fluids mixing and ending up being pumped out. AND DONT FORGET TO SET THE E-BRAKE.

couldnt you just disconnect the hoses and allow the fluid to drain out of the lines and then shut it off before putting any new fluid in? or will this cause catastrophic damage?

Which line is the return line on the transmission housing, the front or rear tube?

That's a great idea and will get the job done... but at nearly $5 a quart.... That seems like it could get REALLY expensive... Just my .02...

yeah i agree but couldnt you just disconnect the lines and let it drain with the truck running and then shut it off when the fluid stops coming out?

i rebuilt, repaired autos for over 40 years, the only one i ever had problem with overfill was the ford c-4. that thing didnt like a quart over at all. had one gm od that i always ran 4 quarts over without any problems.

Don't do that, it has no benefit but to run hotter when it starts churning off the drums when the level is raised. These things are lubed threw oil circuits, not oil slingers like briggs&straton lawnmower engines. I've rebuilt hundreds of trannys, and have all kinds of industry certs. for rebuilding transmissions , so you can trust my word.
