Over filled transmission
Over filled transmission
I went to a well known diesel shop and had a Mag-Hytech trans pan put on a couple months ago. Last week I noticed the transmission was making a shutter feeling when I would accelerate from a stop. Was not sure what it could be but when I was pulling my fifth wheel home from a trip it was getting worse. We made it home OK but I still did not know what the problem was. Yesterday I noticed fluid in the driveway....transmission fluid!! I went to the dealer and had them look it over a they said it was filled to high. 2 quarts more then it should have. The mechanic said no damage was done, he went through the whole transmission and serviced it completely. I called the place that installed the trans pan for me and they apologized but found it hard to believe that it had to much fluid. He said he would reimburse me for the dealers service but now I'm wondering if the transmission will be OK long term? What kind of damage can happen from to much fluid in the transmission? Can you believe this numb-nut mechanic would add too much!!
Overfilling can be as bad as not enough fluid. Over filled fluid causes foaming and can cause slippage due to reduced fluid pressures. If caught early enough, you may not have caused damage and may be fine.
i had my local dealer install my pml tranny pan yesterday when they preformed a tranny flush. the first thing i did when i got home was to check the fluid level. it was a half a quart too full. i immediately drained the extra fluid. i learned along time ago never to trust someone else working on my vehicle - other than myself!! if i have to have somebody else work on my vehicle, i always double check the work!!!!
This is just what the dealer mechanic told me and said that it looks like I got it in time. Thanks

"NEUTRAL POWERFLOW
With the gear selector in the NEUTRAL position (Neutral Powerflow), the power flow of the transmission is essentially the same as in the park position. The only operational difference is that the parking sprag has been disengaged, unlocking the output shaft from the transmission case and allowing it to move freely."

That is for 47/48re.

You guys were correct. I guess the service manual doesn't accurately describe the trans operation in the "power flow" section. I dug into it further and found that fluid is indeed just pumped through the manual valve and back into the sump when in park.
