Our diesels have a knock sensor??

You guys can slap me if this post is just me being ignorant, but I was cruising through my 07 complete shop manual (yes, the 2000+ page shop manual) and noted on a wiring diagram that our motor has a knock sensor. Is this true?

The reason I ask is that it seems kinda pointless given the way a diesel runs... A knock sensor in a gas vehicle detects vibrations caused by early detonation. A diesel ignites from compression anyways...seems kinda pointless.

Any thoughts?

No knock sensor. Sure you're not on the one of the gasser pages?

A knock sensor retards the timing, Diesels have timing, right? Don't know if it actually has a knock sensor or not however.

On a Diesel it would control the pilot injection quantity.

Bosch Common Rail breakdown doesn't list it as a component on Diesel engines just Gasoline engines. Who knows with the 6.7 emissions though?

Diesel Knock sensor:

For this purpose, a structure-borne noise sensor is
fastened at a suitable point to the cylinder block of the internal
combustion engine and records characteristic knocking vibrations in the
combustion chambers of the individual cylinders. The sensor converts these
vibrations into electric signals which are supplied for further processing
to an electronic engine control device. In this case, a knock sensor, that
is to say an acceleration sensor working on the piezoelectric principle,
may advantageously be used as the structure-borne noise sensor.

Such a knock sensor is known, for example, from German Utility Model G 87
06 781.1.

True. I don't have the 6.7L, however (thank God). Still not sure why it's on the wiring diagram for the 5.9L, however. I'll have to post an image of the page in the manual.

BTW, I'm not in the gasser section. It's the diesel-specific section.

Interesting......

If remember correctly a knock sensor used for monitoring your fuel combustion to prevent damages from other parts of the your vehicle right?
