Ouch, auto trans revved to 3500?
I am nota lead foot driver but after I installed my EZ I just had to give a nice WOT from a rolling start... I was surprised and a little scared to see that the truck revved to nearly 3500 RPM in 1st gear. Of the few other times I have floored it, it only went to 2900 RPM. Why would this have happened? Do I have to worry that it happened just once?
If you're worried about harming the engine at 3500 RPM, don't be. "Bad" things shouldn't begin to happen until you're over 4000. Many of us with a manual have been beyond redline several times, and it's nothing to be concerned with.
I've rapped my to 3500 RPM a bazillion times. I think Cummins said destructive harmonics, causing bearing damage, begins to occur at 4300-4500 RPM, but I don't think it causes catastrophic engine failure based on the number of guys that run that high and beyond.

Governors can be modified
Also, a careless shift on a manual trans can easily over-rev the engine. What happened to njoverkill was the combination of heavy throttle and light load (1st gear empty) let the engine rev quickly enough that the governor couldn't react fast enough. BTW, I agree he didn't hurt anything. There are plenty of 12 valves out there running 4,000 RPM governor spring kits, and they don't blow up.
