oil smell?

I did an oil change a week and 300+ miles ago. After driving for a little and shutting down, I hop out of the cab and the oil smell is over powering. I checked the filter and its on tight. The filler cap and dipstick are secure. The plug is not leaking either and I know I didn't spill any on the truck during the change. Checked the oil multiple times before starting up and its about 3/4 of the way between add and full. I can't find any other obvious leaks and am wondering what is causing the smell. Anyone have any ideas what it might be?

Thanks

I don't have an answer but I do have the same problem. Maybe it's normal.

I'll bet all of you guys are using that nasty smelling Rotella oil, commonly referred to as Rosmella. It's stinks just like burt oil. I used it for my first change and will never use it again just because of the foul smell. I found that Delo doesn't have the nasty smell at all.

What brand of oil did you put in? If it was Rotella-T, then you now know why it's called "Rosmella" by everyone on here. I was getting the same odor and my oil was turning dark almost immediately after I changed it when I was using it. After visiting my local Cummins shop and talking to a tech there, I decided to try the 15W40 Valvoline Premium Blue and it changed my opinion on oils immediately. I haven't really noticed the heavy smell that I got with the Rotella, but more importantly, I've driven halfway to my next oil change and the oil is STILL clean. Before switching, I was starting to believe that the dirty oil was something I was gonna have to get used to because it was a diesel engine. Also, when it's cold out, my starts are a lot smoother and I don't have to wait forever for the engine to smooth out. It costs a couple dollars more than the Rotella does but I can clearly see why. I was getting ready to spend a lot more for Royal Purple synthetic but now I can't say that I can justify the $7 a quart when I like to change oil every 5000 miles. And a lot of the sythetics claim big numbers for their oil change intervals, but the Premium Blue has been tested in ISX's up to 65,000 miles between changes, so I can't see why I'd spend the extra $$$. As far as the odor, I can't say that I HAVEN'T smelled any oil odor, cause the crankcase vent located at the front of the engine usually releases some odor on a regular basis, but I haven't noticed it like I did with the Rotella and I haven't noticed it INSIDE the cab like I did before switching. One important thing to remember is that the oil I am talking about is the 15W40 oil, not the synthetic 5W that is also Premium Blue. The 5W is for extreme cold climates and is not recommended for use in most of the lower 48 states because it's not for high temperature climates. BTW, I have no affiliation with any kind of oil company, brand whatsoever, just want to get the word out cause I think others are having the dirty oil issues like I had before. Hope this helps

Mine does it too. I had just put Chevron in. I drove it to wherever. When I got there, I thought oil was spuing onto something hot. I did the something you did. Checked the drain plug, filter, etc. Nothing. After a couple days it went away. Weird!

I've got 2 tanks of fuel on the last oil change w/ Kendall Super-D III 15W40 and the stench still creeps in through the A/C vent at a traffic light. Smells like hot gear lube. Jughead and I have always had good results w/ that brand, but my '04 CTD is the first hiccup. What's the difference in his 2 'toys' and my 24V that makes mine stink when his don't?
