Oil Smell?

Oil Smell?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Just did the first oil change on the 06. Right at 3000 miles. Put the Rotella T 15/40 and a Wix filter. Now I have this terrible oil smell while running, comes in thru the fresh air vent and can also smell it while standing outside the truck when idleing.

Not leaks or anything. Thought maybe I had spilled some onthe exhaust or something but nothing. Pulled the dipstick and took a whiff, and it is definately the same smell. Where and why could the smell be coming out of the crankcase.

Don't mean to sound ignorant, but this is my first diesel. Please help!

Thanks

Rotella oil does that. Other oils don't.

I have 59000 miles on my truck and I still have that smell every once and a while. It goes away after 1000 to 2000 miles after you change your oil.

the smell is coming from the breather on the side of the block. its a small hose that allows the crankcase to breath (pressure to escape). i had a gear oil smell w/ the factory oil but now i also have the rotella smell. some people say it comes from their tailpipe....they better hope not.

Usually goes away after a few hundred miles.

Look for reference to Rosmella! happens to most people after oil change

Had the same problem with the factory fill oil. Truck now has 5300 miles on it, changed oil at 5000 and filled with Cat 15/40... no more smell. Thinking about putting Rosmella back in though. Got in truck last weekend and all u can smell now is my wifes perfume(windows up, sun on truck). So strong I felt like I was in a department store at Christmas time.

Running Synthetic isn't recommended until about 20K I thought?

running synthetic oil in a new engine will not allow the rings to seat properly. dodge says your new engine can take up to 20k to break in and rings to be fully seated depending on how it is run, this is why as a standard rule of thumb on diesels they say wait until 20k. on gas motors you can start running synthetic much sooner as it doesnt take long to seat rings on those engines. theres no reason to switch to synthetic early anyway, theres nothing wrong w/ regular oil. its not like you are hurting your engine the least bit by running regular oil.

Try other brands of oil! Rotella stinks no matter what diesel you put it in. It stunk in my Ram and it stinks in my Mack at work!
