oil relief valve

I am gonna be pulling my relief valve and clean it up and hopefully i wont have to replace it. I am just wondering if its right hand or left hand thread? since i assumed right hand and its really in there and am affraid of stripping it if i put a flex bar on it. Also how stiff is that spring in there? am i gonna have a problem compressing it again?

you dont have to take the spring out it comes off the rail as an assembly, what do you think you are going to clean it, what concern are you trying to fix? if it has been popped off too many times it will get weaker and weaker.

Oil relief valve, do you mean rail relief valve? If so, I'd leave it alone.

I guess its more of a plunger. But i am talking about the valve on the oil filter housing, I saw it on a diagram at cummins. It was just a 3/4 inch bolt head on the housing.

I have really high oil pressure when i start the truck up if its been sitting for a couple hours. Its almost to the maximum of safe range, if i rev it over 1500 rpms it goes over. Once the truck has been driven for 10 mins or so it slowly goes down. Then once a bit warmer it behaves like my other 03 cummins. Maybe my gauge is off? wondering where i can hook in a mechanical oil pressure gauge?

If you are reading the factory gauge..beware it LIES! Actually, it is calculated off computer readings for temp and rpm.

Use the 1/8" pipe plugged port on top of the oil cooler/filter assy. That's the factory test port.
